Chapter 14

A Desperate Pact

The smirk lingered in the thick, stale air long after Dominic’s words slithered into her ears—“your empire just lost its last fortress.”

Celeste’s breaths stuttered, sharp shards of disbelief lodging in her chest. The room—her penthouse office, once a sanctum carved from glass and steel—felt suddenly smaller, walls inching closer, cold and suffocating.

She touched the smooth edge of the mahogany desk, fingers trembling. The weight of the moment pressed down, a leaden fist squeezing hope from her chest. The world tilted; no, it had shattered.

Her phone buzzed violently on the polished surface—a relentless shrill slicing through the suffocating silence. She ignored it, eyes fixed on the black skyline beyond the floor-to-ceiling window. Lightning fractured the night, briefly igniting the cityscape like a beast awakening.

Celeste’s voice was brittle when she finally spoke, razor-thin strands of steel weaving through her weakness. “You think this kills me?”

Dominic’s dark eyes flickered, a storm coiled beneath their surface. “No, Celeste. I want you broken. Kneeling. Watching your empire burn.”

She swallowed the explosion of rage, forcing it into simmering embers. “And what if I don’t?”

“You’re out of moves.” His grin was a predator’s curve—empty and cruel. “Unless…”

Her heart twisted: unless he held a weapon with a trigger she hadn’t seen yet.

Dominic stepped forward, leather boots muted against the plush carpet. “Maybe we can help each other.”

Celeste’s pulse stuttered. The word—help—tasted like poison disguised in honey. No alliance with him. No pact born from desperation.

Yet, the flicker of survival whispered from the rubble of her crumbling plans.

“Say more,” she said, exhaling the last of her pride.

He leaned in, voice dropping to velvet and steel. “Your family’s debts, your investors pulling out, the lawsuits waiting to ignite… I have the leverage to keep you alive, but my empire’s bleeding too.”

“The same damage you inflicted,” she cut in, eyes narrowing. “Why should I trust the wolf baring teeth and offering a bone?”

Dominic’s smile was slow, deliberate. “Because neither of us will survive the winter alone.”

Silence thickened between them. Their bitter history, the scars carved by corporate war and personal betrayal, threatened to drown the fragile truce.

Yet, survival was a savage mistress, and Celeste’s fingertips itched to grasp any lifeline—even if soaked in venom.

“Fine,” she whispered. “But terms. Clear. I’m not signing anything that puts my family in a deeper grave.”

He straightened, pleased but commanding. “Agreed. Equal control. Temporary ceasefire. We patch our companies together, share resources, and crush our common enemies.”

The word—we—felt like a razor against her soul. Still, her mind raced, calculating risks and shreds of hope.

Then, almost too casually, Dominic reached into his blazer pocket and slid a slim dossier across the desk. The leather folder was exquisite, embossed with the Lowell corporate seal—ominous and precise as a bullet’s trajectory.

Celeste’s breath caught. Her fingers hesitated, hovering as if the file burned with secrets.

Dominic’s voice was a low growl. “This,” he said, “is what’ll tip the scales. A confidential dossier—enough to bury a few skeletons in your family’s closet. Or mine.”

Her pulse soared. The promise was electric and deadly.

“Open it,” he urged.

Hands trembling, Celeste broke the seal. The pages unfolded like a nightmare etched in ink—corruption, backdoor deals, betrayals that ran deeper and darker than she had ever imagined.

Amid the cold, carved-out truths that could destroy everything—she found a single line scrawled in frantic handwriting at the very end:

“Trust no one. The real enemy wears your face.”

The room narrowed until only Dominic’s unreadable eyes and the burning dossier remained.

The game had changed.

And in the toxic glow of their desperate pact, the flames between them crackled—dangerous, unpredictable.

The question was no longer about survival. It was about who would claim victory in the ashes.

A sharp knock shattered the fragile silence.

Celeste’s head snapped up, eyes wide—there was no one meant to disturb this moment.

The door creaked open.

Someone stepped inside.

And with that, the stakes exploded beyond anything either of them could have dared to imagine.
