Chapter 12
Celeste’s breath hitched, brittle as a shard of glass caught beneath her ribs. The silence throbbed louder than any storm in the sleek penthouse suite, where the city’s neon heart pulsed beneath sprawling floor-to-ceiling windows.
Blue and pink smears of light painted Dominic’s sharp jawline. His gaze—cold fire locked behind midnight eyes—held hers hostage. No words, just the taut stillness of two colliding worlds, heavy as winter air before a storm.
She bit back the tremor coursing through her fingers, the ones still curled loosely on the edge of the marble tabletop. Each antiseptic whiff of expensive polish, faint citrus undertones, mingled with the subtle musk rolling off him—leather, tobacco, a hint of something darker she couldn’t name.
Her mind screamed retreat, heart hammered betrayal. Yet her feet fought gravity, inching closer without permission, drawn to the impossible orbit of his presence.
“Celeste...” His voice cracked the fragile bubble between them—low, almost a caress, rough-edged with unspoken histories. It wasn’t a question, and it wasn’t a demand. Just a breath threaded with pain and something rawer, more volatile.
She swallowed hard, the metallic tang of adrenaline flooding her tongue. “Why are you here, Dominic? What do you want from me?”
The question hung, tremulous and dangerous. His ghost of a smile ghosted the corner of his mouth—a slash of disdain or desire—she could no longer tell.
“What I want,” he breathed, stepping out of the shadows, an inchless gap between them vanishing like smoke, “is to see if beneath all this... ice... you still burn.”
Heat flared beneath her skin as his hand lifted slowly, hesitating near her arm. The contact promised everything and nothing at once—the electric charge of fingertips grazing silk. Her pulse surged, trembling in the taut wire of tension stretched between desire and dread.
“Don’t,” she whispered, voice brittle but fierce, trying to stake a claim against the avalanche threatening to drown her.
His fingers brushed the soft fabric of her sleeve—a ghost-touch that ignited fireworks. She felt his warmth seep like wildfire through the frozen veneer around her heart, threatening to melt years of carefully built walls.
“Too late,” he murmured, voice dropping so low it was almost a secret. “We’re both past that point.”
For a moment, silence wrapped them tight like smoke in glass. Then—just as her resolve whispered fracture—
A sharp knock shattered the air. Domino’s eyes snapped to the door as footsteps echoed like thunder down the hallway.
The spell broke, distance snapping back with brutal force.
Celeste’s breath caught. Dominic’s arm retracted, leaving an ache where skin had just grazed longing.
“Who—?” she started, voice cracking under the sudden jolt of reality.
But before anyone could answer, the door cracked open.
And the last flicker of fragile intimacy vanished into shadows.
