Chapter 10

Unlikely Protector

The footsteps thundered through the narrow corridor, hammering against the damp stone walls like distant storms gathering energy. Celeste’s breath hitched, each exhale a fragile shatter in the heavy air. Her heart thudded unevenly, a wild rhythm pacing between dread and desperate hope. The flickering bulb above cast jagged shadows that danced with her quickening pulse, silhouettes leaning in, closing like claws.

Then—a sharp click.

The door before her swung open, splintering silence.

“I almost didn’t catch you,” a voice said. Cold, precise, but laced with something hushed like warning.

Celeste’s eyes locked on the figure stepping into the light. Dominic Lowell.

His tailored suit swallowed the narrow foyer’s scant room, black eyes glinting under arched brows—the predator masquerading as daylight.

“Dominic,” she breathed, a mixture of relief and suspicion tangling in her throat. The danger wasn’t gone. It had just shifted.

He reached out without hesitation, the ghost of his fingertips brushing her wrist, steadying. “You shouldn’t be here alone,” he murmured, low enough that only the stones and her ragged heartbeat could witness.

“I could say the same,” Celeste snapped, yanking her arm free, though a flicker of gratitude melted her hardness.

Dominic’s lips curved—a half-smile that didn’t reach ironclad eyes. “Maybe we both have reasons to be cautious tonight.”

She searched him, wariness fraying the edges of anger. “Then why are you here? To watch me close out my own risk?”

“No.” His voice was deliberate, slicing through the tightening knot in her chest. “To keep others from doing it for me.”

Her gaze flicked past him, to the corridor stretching behind—words, rumors, dangers circling like vultures. Dominic’s presence was a challenge, a puzzle threaded with stakes she couldn’t yet untangle.

Before she could demand more, the corridor stirred. Footsteps—soft, calculating—materialized like ghost hunters on the edge of daylight.

Dominic’s hand found hers—firm, unyielding.

“Stay close,” he whispered.

Together, they slipped through the shadows, pressed by steps and secrets.

The glass elevator hummed upward, slicing through the city’s glowing web. The penthouse above brimmed with the curated opulence of corporate power plays—walls echoing with laughter colder than winter frost.

Tonight’s charity gala had shifted from sterile pleasantries to a battleground swarming with silent accusations.

Celeste stood near the bar, the murmur of voices like ripples distorting her thoughts. The burning ice of the latest rumor coiled inside her—whispers that could shred her family’s fragile reputation.

She spotted the usual suspects, pearls of venom tucked behind polite smiles. The accusations: she was crooked, the architect of the company’s downfall, complicit in some scandal-slick deal. The kind that could bury her—and Dom’s empire would be smug enough to watch it burn.

A subtle tightening of the crowd caught her attention, and then—a voice she didn’t expect.

“Enough.”

All conversation ceased as eyes flicked toward the grand staircase, where Dominic Lowell had appeared like a shadow stepping into the spotlight.

He moved with the precise ease of a man who owned every inch of the room, but his gaze sought her out instantly, sharp and unyielding.

“Anyone here who doubts Celeste Harper deserves to ask themselves what truth they’re hiding,” he said carefully, voice low enough to echo faintly but loud enough to cut through murmur and pretense.

A breath caught somewhere deep in the room.

Celeste’s heart slammed, disbelief mixing with an unsteady surge of hope.

Dominic turned, scanning the room with cold fire. “The rumors? Baseless. Malicious. Crafted to break what I intend to build stronger.”

Laughter—brittle, edge-of-collapse—broke the stunned silence. A competitor stepped forward, eyes narrowing. “You defend her. Why, Dominic? What game are you playing?”

He fixed the man with a gaze sharper than a scalpel’s edge. “The only game here is survival. And right now, Celeste Harper isn’t my enemy.”

Gasps ricocheted—the alliance unthinkable.

Celeste could scarcely catch her breath. The weight in Dominic’s eyes deepened. Less playacting, more truth.

Then his lips pressed into a thin line, and the room leaned in, hungry for the next move.

“Because,” Dominic said, voice dropping to a near whisper that rippled through every hushed corner, “I have a reason to protect her.”

The words detonated in the silence, fracturing everything.

Celeste’s gaze pinned him, searching for the motive behind a declaration that would change the rules of their deadly game.

But before she could grasp the meaning, the sharp ping of a text pulled all attention.

Her phone vibrated—a message from an unknown number.

Dominic’s eyes flickered toward the screen in her hand, then back to the unfolding crowd.

The night’s fragile balance shattered with that single, incoming text.

And the question burned hot—what was Dominic really hiding beneath his unexpected defense?

Celeste’s fingers trembled as she read the first line, the words burning like ice against her skin:

“Trust no one. Not even him.”
