Chapter 8
Elena’s breath hitched, shallow and ragged, as her gaze whipped to the motionless figure slumped in the corner.
The faintest flicker of recognition shivered through her—Max. Her sharp intake of air sliced through the choking metallic scent curling in the air, a nauseating blend of blood and antiseptic.
Damon’s grip on her wrist tightened, pulling her out of paralysis, but his dark eyes were grave, storm-swirled. “We don’t have time. Are you sure he’s alive?”
She twisted her fingers, trying to pry free, but the ache in her palm matched the sudden slam of reality: whatever ugliness had exploded here had just metastasized.
She forced herself to her knees beside Max, swallowing the sharp taste of bile. Blood slicked his temple, eyes half-lidded, breath shallow, every shallow rise of his chest a question mark.
“Elena,” Damon’s voice cracked through the chaos like a whip, “listen to me. You’re in danger if you stay here.”
Her throat tightened. “We can’t just—leave him.”
“Max will be alright. But only if we get help, now.” Damon’s fingers brushed a wet lock of hair from Max’s forehead, his touch brusque yet wary, like a man handling a live wire.
She hesitated, poison-laced doubt clawing her insides. Why was Damon so calm? So damn in control? Was he the architect of this nightmare?
Then, from the jagged shards of fear, a brittle truth: they needed each other, tangled in this poison spiral. There was no safety in solitude tonight.
Her breath hitched, fingers trembling as she nodded. “Alright. But promise me something.”
His gaze sharpened. “Anything.”
“No secrets. Not now. Not with everything collapsing.”
He let out a thin, humorless laugh, the kind that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Elena, with what we’re dealing with... secrets are the currency.”
The elevator dinged open down the hall, a metallic heartbeat against the eerie silence. Footsteps echoed—hastening.
“Move,” Damon hissed, hauling Max’s weight with a practiced grip beneath the armpits as Elena followed, every nerve ablaze with tension and unsaid accusations.
They cut through the marbled hallways of CrossCorp’s penthouse—the glittering surface of opulence masking the rotting core beneath.
Behind them, the door to the scene of chaos slammed shut, muffling the sounds beyond but never the lingering scent of dread.
“Why save me?” Elena broke the silence as they rounded the final corner. The question trembled on the edge of confrontation and confession.
Damon’s jaw clenched. “Because this little disaster... it could’ve been orchestrated to end you. And if you fall, so do I.”
Her laugh was brittle, sharp—part disbelief, part reluctant surrender. “Funny how your protection has strings attached.”
He didn’t deny it. “You think I’m here for charity?”
No, she thought bitterly. You’re here for power. For leverage.
The emergency room buzzed cold light and sterile urgency as Max was whisked away. Elena’s heart hammered—adrift, raw, unsure if she was standing on sparks or a powder keg.
Damon watched her, the mask slipping briefly to reveal something flickering beneath the iron. Vulnerability? Or calculation?
“Look, I stepped in to pull you back from the edge. Public scandal—tonight’s event could’ve buried you.” His voice dropped low, a velvet promise laced with warning. “But now... it’s my move. So tell me, Elena: what will you give me in return?”
His words settled like embers in her chest—warmth igniting at the edge, fear sizzling beneath.
The cost of trust.
And she was already standing on the edge of the fire.
A sharp knock came from the glass doors, slicing through the moment—the hallway beyond suddenly too quiet, too watchful.
Elena’s breath caught, eyes flicking to Damon.
His lips curled in a shadow of a smile. “Your move.”
The door creaked open.
A figure stepped into the room.
And the silent war kindled anew.
