Buried Truths

The hallway swallowed the silence between Elena and the shadow. Her heart hammered against ribs tight as a vise; each thudding beat a frantic Morse code of warning.

Her fingers twitched at her side, clutching the thin envelope she’d picked up half an hour ago, heart racing more from the weight of what it promised than from fear. The paper crinkled beneath her skin like brittle ice.

“Show yourself.” Her voice was a cracked whisper, low and brittle, the words trembling in the stale air of the abandoned corridor beyond the boardroom.

A single step answered, slow, deliberate. The dim light caught a shape: Damon Cross. His dark eyes glittered like shards of broken glass, inscrutable but burning with a sharp edge. The city’s neon glow filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him, throwing half his face into shadow.

“Looking for me, Elena?” His smile was a razor blade wrapped in velvet—danger wrapped in charm.

She clutched the envelope tighter. “I found something. You have to explain this,” she said, voice snapping with urgency that threatened to unravel into sheer panic.

He tilted his head, eyebrows arching in a familiar, infuriating amusement that usually meant he had the upper hand. “Oh? And what damning secrets am I hiding now? Another twisted rumor to feed your vendetta?”

“No rumors,” she said, stepping closer, the floor creaking beneath her heels. “Evidence.”

Elena pulled the envelope from her jacket and flicked it open with a nervous precision. Inside was a thick packet of documents—emails, internal memos, unsigned contracts—all stamped with the discreet logos of Cross Holdings and Price Enterprises. The fonts were cold, impersonal, but the words burned with betrayal.

“Look at this,” she demanded, thrusting a memo toward him. “Plans to sabotage Price Technologies—false allegations, fake patents, manipulated stock reports. Your signatures or initials are on some of these.”

Damon’s gaze locked on the pages, steady as steel. He sighed, a slow exhale of tension and something darker—maybe regret, maybe calculation.

“You don’t understand the game, Elena,” he said quietly, voice a gravelly murmur. “It’s not personal. It’s survival.”

“Survival?” She laughed, bitter and sharp. “You’re destroying my family.”

He stepped forward, the distance closing until his breath brushed her skin, warm and unsettling.

“Families don’t matter in business,” he whispered, voice low enough to scrape at her nerves. “Secrets do.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed, tracing his shadows. “Then tell me this—who else was involved? Who’s the mole feeding you inside?”

Damon’s smile vanished. His eyes darkened with a flicker of unease. For a moment, the titan of industry was just a man cornered.

Before he could answer, a soft beep echoed from her purse. A message, urgent and buzzing like a live wire. Elena tore the flap aside and scanned the screen:

Look closer. It’s closer than you think.

She froze. The message was unsigned, but the implication was clear—a warning? A taunt?

Her gaze darted back to Damon, searching for a flicker of anything familiar beneath his unreadable mask.

“I’m being watched,” she muttered.

He shrugged, almost bored. “Welcome to the jungle.”

Elena’s breath caught as her eyes then dropped to the bottom line of one document—handwritten, barely visible beneath the printed text, a note that chilled her blood: a signature that wasn’t Damon’s, yet shockingly familiar.

Her pulse slammed against her skull.

The mole— someone far closer than she’d dared imagine.

She stiffened. Hands shaking, she ran a trembling finger over the name scrawled there.

It was hers.

Elena swallowed the rising storm of disbelief and dread, her world fracturing anew.

The real enemy wasn’t a stranger in the shadows.

It was someone in her own circle.

The corridor seemed to close in, the walls pressing closer with every heartbeat.

“Who?” she gasped, spinning to face Damon.

“Not who,” he said quietly, voice threading ice and fire. “What you trusted most.”

A sudden crackle echoed—a sharp rap at the far door—the sound stopped them both, freezing the moment in shards of electricity.

Elena’s eyes locked with Damon’s.

“We need to find out who. Now.”

The knock sounded again—urgent this time, demanding.

Elena’s breath hitched.

Someone was coming.

And the secret they carried was about to explode.

She swallowed hard and reached for the door handle.

The truth waited—just beyond.
