Chapter 3
The knock echoed again, slicing through the thick silence layered over the penthouse. Elena’s pulse hammered so loud she feared the wood itself would shake apart. Her hand hovered just above the polished brass handle, fingers curling into claws—half wanting to rip the door open, half desperate to dissolve into the shadows behind her.
From the corner of her eye, Damian—a silent phantom in a tailored suit—stiffened, his sharp gaze fixed on the door like a predator tracking prey.
"Who is it?" Elena’s voice was brittle, the single word slipping out in a cautious breath.
No answer.
Another knock. This time quick, urgent.
Elena stepped back, every nerve humming. Her mind sprinted through worst-case scenarios.
Was it some vindictive board member, hungry to pounce on her family’s legacy?
A hired spy sent by Damon?
Or worse—someone who knew the truth she buried deep beneath layers of polished lies and corporate ruthlessness.
She swallowed the sudden dry lump lodged in her throat.
The light in the room flickered as the city’s neon veins pulsed through storm-darkened clouds.
A metallic scent—cold and sharp—crept under the door, an invisible knife sliding alongside her nerves.
"Damn it." Elena closed her eyes, willing the chaotic storm within to still.
"Elena," Damian’s voice cracked the tension with an unnatural calm not quite reaching his eyes. "Don’t open it. Not without knowing."
Her breath caught on the sound of his name—calm, commanding, but laced with unspoken warnings. Trust was a currency she squandered reckless and often, but tonight, it felt like the only shield between her and the abyss.
"Then what do we do?" Her whisper was a ghost, trembling on fragile hope.
His jaw clenched hard enough to cut glass. “We find out who’s out there first.”
Before she could protest, another sound—a soft clicking—burst from the doorway. Elena’s gaze snapped back.
The lock—no, the deadbolt—was already being undone from the outside.
Time narrowed. Cold sweat pricked down her spine.
“Move!” Damian’s hand gripped her arm like iron, yanking her back toward the shadowed hall behind.
They stumbled into darkness just as the door creaked open a fraction wider, slicing a sliver of cold blue light across the floor like a warning blade.
A silhouette loomed; tall, nimble, but shrouded enough to leave Elena’s heart vaulting into an impossible rhythm.
The intruder stepped in—hands raised, voice low but sharp, cutting into the stifling night.
"Elena Price," the stranger breathed out, fingers slipping a small folded note onto the floor before disappearing as swiftly as the storm outside.
Elena’s eyes darted down, heart tripping over itself.
She barely caught the fold before Damon’s dark shadow eclipsed the hall, his voice velvet-coated menace.
“Leaving a calling card? How theatrical.”
She held the note so tightly her knuckles went white, the ink bleeding faintly through.
Unfolding it, she read a single chilling line:
“Every secret has its watcher. Yours just stepped out of the shadows.”
Her gaze snapped up to Damon’s.
Tension hung between them curved and taut as a bowstring.
“Who’s watching me?” she demanded, the words a rough edge on her lips.
He smiled—not warm, but dangerous, a silent threat wrapped in a polished mask.
“That, Elena, is a question I’ve been asking myself for a very long time.”
Behind them, the city thrummed—a living beast of gleaming glass towers and veiled menace—watching. Waiting.
And Elena realized, with a fracture in her steady breath, that the battlefield was no longer just corporate.
It was personal.
And the shadows were closing in.
