Chapter 14
The air between Elena and Maya was thick with the residue of unspoken truths—like smoke that clings after a fire's been snuffed. Elena’s heart hammered, each beat a sharp rap in the hollow chamber of suspicion. Her fingers ached from clenching into trembling fists, nails digging crescent moons into palm skin. She tore her gaze away, eyes darting to the sprawling office bathed in the brittle blue glow of early dawn.
Damon crossed the room with his usual predator’s grace, the crisp lines of his tailored suit unruffled by the storm swirling beneath. His voice broke the taut silence.
“We don’t have much time before this leaks further.” His words skewed in the cold, heavy air, laced with an edge sharper than a glass shard. “We need that betrayer out in the open.”
Elena’s lips twitched—half snarl, half plea. “And you think the surveillance room is our trap?”
He nodded once, fast and certain. “If the traitor thinks they’re clever... they won’t cover their tracks on tape.”
Her breath hitched. Memories of flash drives, stolen emails, coded messages twisting into dead ends. The betrayer was someone close—someone smart enough to slip through all their defenses. To see it all through.
A sudden clatter shattered the fragile stillness. Maya spun toward the filing cabinet, pulling open a drawer with trembling hands and a breathless urgency. She produced a slim black USB stick—the ghost of a desperate hope.
"Found it," Maya whispered, voice fraught with a shaky resolve. “It’s the last piece. Whatever’s on here... could finish this.”
Elena reached for it, her fingertips grazing Maya’s, both of them suddenly too aware of the brittle thread they shared—fragile and trembling.
“Let’s go,” Damon muttered, already moving toward the surveillance room at the back of the penthouse suite. The room’s frosted glass door loomed, a translucent barrier that held secrets darker than the city’s night beneath them.
Elena’s pulse slammed in her temples as they stepped inside. The sterile hum of monitors cast ghostly reflections on their faces. Rows of screens flickered with static and live feeds—from lobbies, hallways, conference rooms. Every corner of their fortress laid bare for their enemy, yet the betrayer remained a shadow twisting in the blurry gray.
Damon slipped the USB into the console. A whirl of processing bars, rendering lines of code. Then, a single video loaded.
The screen bloomed with crisp clarity—the lobby at dawn, slow-shuttered footage painting the sterile marble floor pale gold. Two figures approached.
Elena’s breath hitched. Her eyes locked onto the smaller frame stepping ahead. The tilt of a head. The length of a coat. A gesture so mundane yet intimate in its unconsciousness.
She swallowed. Her throat tightened with a cold familiarity that gnawed beneath her skin, faltering the fortress of her composure.
The second figure stepped forward—taller, broader—but Elena’s gaze was fixed. The angle of the face, barely caught in shadow, whispered a name she never expected to see again here.
Maya stiffened, eyes wide as the screen rewound and slowed, frame by merciless frame.
“Doesn’t…” Damon began, voice clipped, wary. “Did we just see who I think we saw?”
Elena’s jaw clenched. “That’s impossible.”
A rapid knock at the surveillance room’s glass startled them, making their shadows shudder on the walls.
“This—this changes everything.” Maya’s whisper crackled with disbelief.
Elena’s breath tangled with the cold truth settling between them; their enemy was no stranger—it was a face scratched from her past, buried deep beneath years of silence.
“Ready to find out just how deep this rabbit hole goes?”
The door handle turned slowly—a figure paused outside, silhouetted against the rising sun.
Elena’s hand tightened on the USB, nails biting into her palm.
Because some bridges burn so fiercely, even the brightest flames can’t hide what’s lurking in the ashes.
