Chapter 11
Elena’s chest heaved, a ragged sound swallowed by the cold hum of the penthouse boardroom. The sharp click of her heels echoed against the marble tiles as she took a trembling step forward. Damon’s fist slackened at his side, but the tension in his jaw didn’t release. Across the room, the intruder’s eyes glittered with cruel satisfaction—each silent second stretched into a blade slicing through the fragile calm.
The air tasted metallic, thick with unsaid threats.
“Elena,” Damon’s voice broke through, low and jagged. “Are you all right?”
She swallowed, bitterness curling on her tongue. All right? The word felt like ash. The rival was still standing there, a living wound reopened.
Before Elena could answer, the woman—a specter from a past Elena had fought to bury—stepped forward, lips curling with venom. “Still playing the victim, Price? Or are you finally ready to admit you’re outmatched?”
The words slammed into Elena’s spine. Heat flared in her gut—not the raw, wild blaze she often harnessed—but a cold, clinical fury. This was a challenge beneath the glittering surface; a challenge that threatened to unravel everything.
Damon’s eyes narrowed, a storm barely contained. “Enough.”
The woman’s smirk twisted. “Or what? You’ll protect her with your empire’s edge? Your secrets won’t save you this time, Damon.”
Elena’s pulse thundered, the room closing in. She could feel Damon’s gaze flicker toward her, skepticism tangled with something sharper—was it doubt? Loyalty? The question gnawed at her, twisting tighter than any alliance thread.
Her voice cut through the charged atmosphere, steady despite the tremor she fought to hide. “Who is she?”
Damon’s jaw clenched, but something in his eyes cracked, just for a heartbeat. “She’s... a ghost I thought was dead.”
Elena’s stomach clenched. The past refused to stay buried. And now, the present snapped with fragility.
The rival laughed—a sound like shattering glass. “You think you can control the past? Secrets are liabilities. I’m here to collect.”
The thickness between Elena and Damon pulsed, words dangling like a plunge into unknown waters.
“Elena,” Damon said quietly, stepping closer, “we don’t have to show her strength. She’s a riddle, but—”
Before he could finish, the room’s brittle calm fractured with a sharp rap at the glass wall.
The door slid open.
Elena’s breath hitched as a junior executive appeared, holding a tablet like a fragile lifeline. “Mr. Cross, your twenty-minute meeting with Vance Capital is about to start downstairs.”
Damon’s eyes darkened. The mention of Vance Capital sent a current through the room—alliances, opportunities, and dangers tangled like barbed wire.
Elena nodded, suddenly aware of the weight pressing on every second. They were on the edge of a corporate battleground; every move counted.
Damon squared his shoulders and moved toward the elevator, his steps deliberate.
But midway, the lights flickered.
A hush drowned the hum of city noise. Then, silence.
Elena’s eyes darted to where Damon had been—only to find the space empty.
“Damon?” Her voice cracked the quiet, but no answer came.
Her gaze shifted to the open elevator doors, no longer welcoming but ominous. The hallway beyond dissolved into shadows.
Cold fingers gripped her spine.
He was gone.
A shiver spiraled down her back. The message from before—the ghost, the threat—sudden flashes of unease flooded her.
Had Damon fled? Or was something worse unfolding?
The clock on the wall blinked aggressively as Elena fought the growing tide of panic.
Her fingers curled into fists. No. This wasn’t over.
Not yet.
But now, the question throbbed like a heartbeat in the silence:
Where was Damon?
And more terrifying—
Why?
