Chapter 5
The weight of the contract sat heavily in the air, a suffocating specter pressing into every corner of the penthouse suite. Elise's hands trembled, the ink barely dry on the paper still burning like acid beneath her skin. She forced herself to steady her breath, to chase away the dizzy haze threatening to pull her under, but the room spun just the same.
Alexander stood not far from the floor-to-ceiling window, like a statue carved from ice. His jaw was clenched tighter than the cuffs of his tailored suit, eyes cast out over the city lights that stretched endlessly below. The metropolis pulsed with life beneath that cold glass, but all she could see was the distance churning in his gaze—the kind of distance that swallowed hope whole.
"Elise," he said abruptly, voice low as the shadows swallowed his features. The sound startled her out of the frozen reverie. "Do you know why I agreed to this?"
She blinked, caught off guard. "Because you want control. Because you don’t trust anyone."
He let out a humorless laugh that scraped against the walls. "That’s what everyone thinks."
His eyes flicked toward her, sharp and unreadable, but in that fleeting glance—just a flicker—something cracked. Vulnerability, raw and barely tethered, crossed his face.
"I'm tired," he confessed, voice cracking like fragile glass. "Tired of the masks. The ambitions. The endless war."
Elise swallowed hard, the words piercing her armor. She had never heard Alexander Hawthorne admit exhaustion—never the man who ruled the boardroom with cold precision and a merciless grip.
"What are you saying?" she dared to ask, stepping closer, her heartbeat thudding like a frantic drum in her chest.
He turned fully, and for a moment, the armor fell away. The sharp edges of his expression softened, revealing a man burdened by something far heavier than greed or power.
"I’m saying I’m scared," he whispered.
The room held its breath. Elise’s throat tightened as a rush of sympathy collided with the guarded wariness that had always kept her at arm’s length.
Her voice was barely audible. "About what?"
"About losing everything I thought I controlled," he said, voice low but steady. "About letting someone see the cracks."
For a heartbeat, they were two strangers trapped in a fragile moment—each haunted by secrets neither dared to voice.
Suddenly, Alexander’s knees buckled beneath him as if seized by invisible chains. His hand shot out, bracing against the marble countertop, knuckles whitening. Elise’s world tilted, panic igniting like wildfire.
“Alexander!” she gasped, reaching out, but he swayed dangerously, lips parted in a silent plea she couldn’t ignore.
His body collapsed toward the floor like a shattering statue. Time fractured—the sharp clack of his shoes against the tiled floor, the thud of his weight hitting hard, and the storm of fear surging uncontrollably in Elise’s veins.
Her fingers trembled as she caught his arm, heart hammering so loud it almost drowned the distant city hum.
“Stay with me,” she demanded, voice breaking. “Stay with me.”
The cold haze behind his eyes deepened—an abyss threatening to swallow him whole.
There was no time for questions. No calm space to understand the man behind the billionaire.
Only the raw, urgent need to save him.
The air between them thickened, heavy with unspoken desperation, as Elise cradled his collapsing form.
And just like that, the icy mask shattered.
