Chapter 3

Damien Crowe Returns

The creak folded into the silence, sharp as cold steel against the dim room’s quiet. Lena froze, blood pounding in her ears, a million tiny hairs standing on end along her neck.

Someone was here.

Her hand slid beneath the table, tightening around the letter opener she’d grabbed on impulse. The weight felt small but real—the only weapon in reach. The air thickened, stale with dust and something else… something darker, like a bad promise.

Slow, deliberate footsteps traced a pattern across the cracked hardwood floor. Then a figure emerged from the shadows—tall, lean, with a presence that seemed to carve the darkness away.

Damien Crowe.

His eyes—dark, unyielding—locked on her with a predator’s calm, those same icy blue depths that had haunted her memories for years. His jaw was set, mouth a hard line, but behind that controlled mask, something flickered: a ghost of a smile? Or a warning?

“You’ve been busy,” he said, voice low and smooth, sliding through the air like smoke curling up a chimney. “City’s changed. So have you.”

Lena’s throat went dry. Her mind scrambled for the words to push him back, but only a whisper emerged. “Why are you here?”

Damien took a slow step forward, eyes never wavering. “The past has a habit of catching up, Lena. Especially when secrets are involved.”

The name slid into the room like ice in a glass, chilling everything it touched. Lena’s grip tightened on the letter opener, her pulse thundering louder, drowning out everything but the primal need to survive.

“Secrets,” she repeated, lips trembling. “You don’t know anything.”

“Maybe I do,” he replied, tilting his head, watching her unravel in real time. “Or maybe I’m here to find out.”

The walls seemed to close in. The city’s distant hum faded to a dull roar at the edges of her senses. A cold breeze whispered through the cracked window behind Damien, sending a paper skittering across the floor like a ghost seeking escape.

Lena’s eyes caught it—the familiar letterhead scrawled with her family’s crest. Her heart slammed against her ribcage.

“How…?” She barely breathed the question.

Damien’s smile sharpened, razor-thin and dangerous. “Let’s just say old debts have a way of surfacing. And I’m here to collect.”

A heavy silence settled, charged with unspoken truths. Lena fought the surge of panic that clawed at her insides, a dark spiral she’d long buried.

“Tell me,” she whispered, voice raw, “what do you want from us?”

He stepped closer, too close, and his gaze flicked ever so slightly toward the door she had just entered through. “Not what I want. What I need.”

The entire room pulsed with tense energy—something fragile and terrible poised on a knife’s edge. Then, like a viper’s strike, Damien leaned in, his breath a cool shadow against her cheek.

“There’s something—about your family. Something buried deeper than any of you know. And if I’m right…” His voice dropped to a dangerously quiet growl, “it could destroy everything.”

Lena swallowed hard. Her mind raced, mind unraveling the threads that had held her fortress of secrets together.

She fought the urge to lash out, to flee, to shatter everything just to keep this monster at bay. But the truth had a way of dragging you out, whether you were ready or not.

Damien straightened, eyes blazing with a dangerous fire. “Tick-tock, Lena. Time’s running out.”

The second his words faded, the creak of the front door echoed—a slow knock, firm and insistent.

Her breath hitched.

Because in that moment, Lena knew—

Damien Crowe held a secret about her family, and its shadow stretched longer and darker than she ever imagined.

The door waited.

So did the truth.

And Lena’s world tilted on the edge of a knife.
