Chapter 14

The Forgotten Pact

Lena’s breath was a ragged escort through the silent room. The door clicked shut, the lock sliding home with chilling finality. In the dim light, her knuckles whitened around the hilt of the knife, the cold steel a lifeline against the invisible weight pressing at her chest.

Damien’s shadow stirred at the threshold, fluid and merciless, the faintest smirk ghosting his lips—not quite a smile, but a promise of confrontation. His eyes, sharp as fractured glass, locked onto hers.

“Still clutching that?” His voice slithered through the stale air, murmured venom wrapped in silk.

Lena’s heartbeat burrowed into a deafening rhythm. Something primal clenched inside her—a cocktail of fear, defiance, and a frayed resolve. Her hands trembled—not from hesitation, but from the raw intensity of being cornered.

“Why are you here, Damien?” Her voice cracked, the whisper a jagged edge against the quiet. “What do you want from me?”

He took a step forward. The floorboards groaned under the motion, the sound sharp echoes in the suffocating stillness. “You don’t get to ask questions tonight. Not until you understand what binds us.” His gaze flicked to a battered leather case sitting half-concealed under a threadbare armchair.

Lena’s eyes narrowed. “What binds us?”

Damien’s smile deepened—dark and knowing. “The pact your family buried years ago. The one you’ve spent your life pretending didn’t exist.”

Her pulse skipped, lips parting as if to protest, to deny ancient ghosts. But the words lodged, cold and real. She remembered now—the vague rumors, hushed warnings whispered beneath the clinking of expensive glasses during long-ago family gatherings. A promise forged in shadows; a debt that had never been repaid.

Damien crouched slowly, the knife disappearing into his palm as he pulled the leather case free. He flipped the clasps with deliberate patience and set the fragile bundle on the table, cracking it open like a tomb.

Inside lay a thin stack of yellowed parchment, brittle with age. The ink was faded, but legible—script looping with painstaking elegance. Lena’s eyes were drawn, spellbound despite the rising scent of old paper and dust.

“The Forgotten Pact,” Damien breathed, finger tracing the calligraphy like a lover’s caress.

Her throat tightened. The document flickered between them, a fragile fulcrum balancing past and present. The delicate signatures at the bottom—one an ornate maris seal, the other a stark raven emblem she’d only seen burned into nightmares—spoke volumes.

“This binds us, Lena,” Damien said, voice hardening. “An agreement between your family and mine. One that explains everything—the debts, the betrayals, the blood that stains our history.”

She swallowed the knot threatening to erupt in her throat. “But… I never knew. No one spoke of this to me. Why keep it hidden?”

He shrugged, a shadow passing over his expression like a ragged stormcloud. “Because it was shameful. Dangerous. And now? It’s a weapon. And a key.”

Lena’s gaze dropped to a bold line halfway down the page, ink still surprisingly vivid: “In exchange for silence and safeguard, the Maris bloodline shall grant passage to the Legacy, lest chaos consume both houses.”

“What passage?” she whispered, heart hammering in frantic suspicion.

Damien leaned in, eyes luminous beneath heavy lids. “A legacy buried beneath lies and veils. A truth powerful enough to shatter both our worlds… if only someone knows where to find it.”

A cold gust seeped from the cracked window, tickling the nape of her neck, carrying with it the faintest hint of iron and smoke. Lena shivered, though the room was still.

“I promised to protect my family’s secret,” she said, voice tight with dread. “But I didn’t know that secret was a door—to what exactly?”

Damien’s smile morphed, something softer yet ruthlessly intent. “A door that opens only by this pact. We both hold the key, Lena.”

Her eyes froze—a strike of lightning splitting the dark. The knife in her hand gleamed faintly, poised between guardianship and recklessness.

The pact’s words burned on her retinas, their promise choking the space between truth and terror. And as reality drew tighter around her like a noose, Lena understood something terrifying: the vow she’d taken was not just a cage. It was the beginning of a war she might already have lost.

Then, just as silence threatened to swallow them whole, the narrow beam of streetlight outside shifted—and caught something moving in the glass behind Damien.

A faint, deliberate knock echoed from the door she’d locked moments ago.

Lena’s breath caught, fingers tightening on the knife’s handle.

The forgotten pact was only the starting line. And someone else knew its truth.
