Chapter 12
The air inside the cramped apartment snapped cold, as if the shadows themselves recoiled. Lena stood frozen, eyes wide and chest tight, the whispered words slicing through the heavy stillness like a razor. “Surprised to see me?”
She swallowed hard, her tongue suddenly heavy and numb. The faint flicker of the dying candle on the cluttered side table cast a shaky glow, throwing the intruder’s silhouette into sharp relief—slim, angular, utterly familiar. The jagged edge of betrayal.
“Damien.” The name escaped her lips as a fragile tremor. A lie, almost—she’d prayed his face would never darken this place again. Her sanctuary.
His smile was slow, venomous, sliding between them like poison pooling at her feet. “I thought you’d be glad to see me. Doesn’t a sister deserve a visitor after all this silence?”
Lena’s fingers curled into fists, nails carving crescents into her palms. Every muscle screamed to run, to hide under the worn threadbare covers, to shut him out—but the truth was sharper, louder. Damien knew where to find her. And he knew exactly what he’d just undone.
“Why are you here?” Her voice cracked—a brittle weapon barely wielded. “What do you want?”
He stepped closer, that predator grace she used to envy now twisted with menace. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Lena. You think you’re protecting them? The family? You’re only digging the grave deeper.”
A metallic scent hit her—faint, intoxicating. The lingering smoke from last night’s cigarette, or something colder? Her breath hitched, eyes flicking to the small paper knife on the table, half-hidden beneath a scattered heap of sketches.
Danger hung pregnant in the air.
Damien’s gaze caught the movement—a flicker of amusement darkened his eyes. “Still armed with your toys, I see. Not like your brushes to stand a chance. But tell me—how far will you go? What lines will you cross before the whole house collapses?”
His words twisted inside her chest, tight and torturous. She had built walls from silence and stubborn pride. Now, every brick trembled with fracture.
Lena’s lips thinned, jaw clenched. “I won’t let you—any of you—destroy what little we have left.”
He laughed—a bitter, hollow sound that echoed in the cramped space.
“Little? You mean the lies, the cover-ups, the blood we’ve spilled in shadows? You think burying the truth saves us? No, it only festers.”
A sudden slam thundered from the door behind her. Cold dread froze Lena in place. Her heartbeat thudded in her ears, rapid and uneven, like a trapped bird fighting for escape.
Damien’s grin sharpened. “Looks like your loyal guardians have arrived.”
Lena spun around. The door burst open with a crack that splintered the room’s fragile calm. Three figures poured into the dim light—faces her pulse recognized with terrible clarity.
Eli, his eyes narrowing beneath the mess of unruly hair.
Marla, the ghost behind countless whispered secrets, lips pressed into a thin line of judgment.
And then, ripping through the air, the one she never expected this time—
Joss.
His expression was unreadable, but his hands clenched tightly at his sides as if holding something monstrous back. The room compressed—each breath thick with betrayal, confusion, and the suffocating weight of fractured trust.
“Lena.” His voice was low, forced steady.
“Why?” The question slipped out before she could cage it.
Joss met her gaze, a trembling flame of old loyalty flickering in his eyes, quickly smeared by shadow. “We have no choice. Damien promised us all salvation—if we don’t cooperate.”
“Salvation?” Lena’s laugh was brittle, tearing at the fragile line between hope and despair. “By selling us out? By turning on our own blood?”
Marla’s voice cut in, cold and sharp as shattered glass. “This isn’t about family anymore. It’s about survival.”
Eli’s gaze flicked from Damien to her—calculating, cold. “The city’s changed. Old codes, old alliances—they don’t mean shit when you’re buried six feet under.”
Lena’s chest trembled, the weight of the truths finally crashing like jagged waves over her. Every promise deformed, every loyalty shattered under the glare of ruthless ambition.
Her mind raced—searching for the thinnest thread of trust among those who once stood beside her, now poised like daggers in shadow.
The paper knife glinted faintly from the table. A reminder of all the lines drawn and crossed.
A sudden, sharp crash shattered the tension as the window behind them exploded inward.
Glass sprayed like icy rain. The room plunged into chaos.
Lena ducked instinctively, heart hammering wild and loud. The smell of burning fuel and smoke slithered through the broken air.
Gunfire cracked—a stunned cry shattered in the background.
Amid the chaos, Lena’s eyes locked with Damien's. His smirk vanished, replaced by cold, ruthless calculation.
“Choose,” he breathed through gritted teeth. “Who do you trust? Who survives?”
The walls closed in, every shadow stalking with deadly intent.
Lena’s breath hitched, vision narrowing to the blade she grasped tight—the thin, weighted line between salvation and destruction.
The room tilted violently as another gunshot rang out—too close, too deadly.
Her world crumbling in a storm of betrayal and blood, one truth blazed clear and terrifying.
She was utterly alone.
And the war for her family’s soul had just burst into brutal flame.
The knife trembled in her trembling hand.
Then—
A sudden crack echoed sharply, and the lights flickered out, plunging them all into suffocating blackness.
