Chapter 3
The shutter’s faint echo faded, but its sharp crack still throbbed in Evelyn’s veins like a pulse hammered too hard. Her breath came ragged, uneven, mingling with the city’s distant drone. Somewhere up above, neon lights bled color into the thick night air, but the alley was all shadows—cold, silent, watching.
Her fingers trembled, clutching the torn edge of her leather jacket. She blinked, forcing her eyes to adjust, heart pounding a frantic tattoo against her ribs. There’d been no flash. No figure had moved. Just that silhouette lurking like a ghost, a watcher whose presence branded her skin.
Evelyn’s mind raced—was this a threat? A warning? Or worse, surveillance?
“Who’s there?” she spat into the darkness, voice low but slicing the stillness.
No answer. Just the slow drip of water from a rusted pipe, plinking rhythmically on cracked concrete.
She swallowed a dry sob, curling her fingers tighter. Camera shutters weren’t random. Not here. Not now.
Behind her, the alleyway’s mouth yawned wide open—leading back to Mara Tower, that steel leviathan boasting wealth and ruthlessness. A brutal monument to her family’s legacy—the throne she’d been kicked off.
Images unfurled in her mind, flickering with raw urgency: Father’s cold eyes staring blankly from his study. The blood slick on the marble floor. The twisted lie that had buried her beneath shame and exile. And Damien—smiling like a king on his throne, holding all the cards.
Evelyn let out a bitter laugh, brittle as shattered glass.
Whoever was here knew exactly who she was. Knew she’d step back into the game.
A sudden noise—a metallic scrape—snapped her attention to a narrow side passage. Slow footsteps, deliberate.
She pressed her back against the graffiti-stained bricks, heart hammering like war drums. The figure didn’t emerge. Instead, a rough slip of paper dropped onto the grime-streaked ground before her feet.
Evelyn’s eyes darted upward, scanning the black for another shadow. Nothing.
Cold fingers curled around the note, pulling it close under the faint light pulsing from a flickering street lamp.
“Watch your back. They watch everything—even your breath.”
No signature. No trace. Just the cold weight of the message.
Her skin prickled, goosebumps marching under her arms. Someone knew. Someone was already three steps ahead—waiting in the dark with eyes sharper than any blade Damien ever forged.
Evelyn crushed the paper in her fist, the edges biting into her skin.
The city seemed to hold its breath around her, a cage tightening with every passing second.
She wasn’t just hunted. She was a prey in a game with rules she still barely understood.
A flicker of movement by the alley’s exit caught her eye. A man—tall, coat collar turned high—paused at the edge, eyeing her.
His gaze was a pistol’s muzzle: cold, unflinching.
Then he melted away, swallowed by the crowd swelling beyond the alley’s threshold.
Evelyn exhaled sharply, forcing her trembling legs to carry her forward. She needed answers—needed to unravel the truth Damien dared bury beneath power and blood.
Neon rain hammered her face as she stepped onto the wet street.
Somewhere beyond the gleaming towers, a voice whispered lies and secrets—taunting her to chase shadows until she bled.
And Evelyn Mara was just beginning to bleed.
Her phone vibrated sharply. A single message glowed on the screen:
“Trust no one. Not even those who share your blood.”
The streetlights flickered—then plunged the world into darkness.
And in the suffocating black, Evelyn felt eyes burn into her soul.
