Chapter 11

Lines in the Sand

The storm’s growl seeped into the bones of the room, thunder cracking like a whip against the glass walls of the penthouse. Rain hammered in relentless sheets, an unyielding assault against the city’s glittering facades—and against Evelyn Mara’s resolve.

Her fingers clenched the edge of the polished oak table, nails sinking into the smooth surface with a jagged rhythm. The words she'd spoken floated in the charged air, sharp and unyielding: “It’s someone inside the Mara bloodline.”

Damien stood across from her, the faint sheen of sweat on his temple glistening in the harsh light. His jaw tightened, the line deep and unyielding. For a heartbeat, his usual calm cracked, revealing the simmering fury beneath the veneer of control. Then he masked it, his lips curling into a brittle, controlled smile.

“So,” he said, voice low and dangerous, “you think you’ve found a knife in our midst? A traitor. Do you intend to carve them out yourself? Or do you want me to handle the bleeding?”

Evelyn’s eyes didn’t waver. The weight of her gaze pinned him, tethered him to the truth she’d unearthed. “I’m done waiting, Damien. Your kingdom’s foundation is rotting from the inside. And I have evidence.”

A flicker in his eyes. Calculating. Threatened.

“There’s a difference between suspicion and proof.”

She reached into her coat pocket, sliding a slim, encrypted tablet across the table. His fingers hovered momentarily before snatching it up.

Images bloomed across the screen: financial transfers, clandestine meetings, whispered deals under neon shadows. Names, dates, timestamps—a trail too precise for denial.

His breath stuttered, barely perceptible, the cold realization knocking at the gates of his arrogance.

“Where did you get this?” His voice cracked, scarcely a whisper.

“From someone who knows what’s at stake,” Evelyn said, voice hard as shattered glass. She leaned forward, shadows flickering against her sharp cheekbones. “I’m here to make a proposition. This ends with negotiations—terms that guarantee I’m no longer the discarded daughter. Share the power you cling to, or watch your empire collapse.”

The room seemed to constrict. The air drew heavy, thick with tension as Damien studied her. The facade of the untouchable patriarch was cracking.

Behind his eyes, plans twisted and coiled—each more desperate than the last.

Finally, he slammed the tablet down, the sharp clang echoing off the walls.

“You think wielding secrets makes you power? You’re naïve, Evelyn. But... maybe,"—he paused, a venomous grin twisting his lips—“we talk terms. For now.”

Her pulse ticked faster, lightning lancing through the glass beyond.

She knew better than to trust his words.

Outside, the city roared, a beast unrestrained beneath the storm.

As evening bled into night, Evelyn’s phone vibrated—a subtle, insistent buzz in her palm. She unlocked it, scanning the message that blinked onto the screen: “Watch your back. Not everyone can be trusted.”

Cold fingers curled around her heart.

She glanced toward the window. Somewhere in the labyrinth of glimmer and grit, Damien was already making his move.

A sudden chime from her secure line broke the fragile calm. She answered.

The voice was ragged, tense. “They’re gone. Lila’s been taken.”

The silence shattered around her like glass.

Lila—her closest ally, the one woman who had stood shoulder to shoulder with her through the bloodiest storms—was missing.

The city’s shadows deepened. Somewhere, unseen, lines were being drawn in blood.

And Damien had just crossed them.

The screen went dark.

Evelyn’s breath hitched. Fingers trembling on the receiver.

This war was far from over.

And the next move would be the deadliest yet.
