Chapter 7
The knock echoed again—sharp, deliberate, slicing through the silence like a knife. Every nerve in Elara’s body tightened, raw and exposed. She pressed her palm against the cold edge of the door, fingertips trembling as her breath hitched. The air had thickened, the faint scent of rain sneaking in through the cracked window—metallic, charged, a whisper of storms to come.
Heart hammering against ribs like a trapped bird, Elara hesitated. One part of her screamed to bolt, to vanish into the twisting city shadows beyond, but the other knew better. Whoever was outside wasn’t a stranger. Not really.
“Come in,” her voice barely rose above a ragged whisper, brittle and threaded with a tension that made her throat burn.
The door creaked open. One narrow shaft of hallway light spilled inside, casting a long silhouette against the polished floor. Then he stepped through.
Calm. Controlled. Damon Blackwood, every inch the predator poised to strike.
His dark eyes flicked over her face, unreadable, as if weighing her soul in invisible scales.
“I wasn’t expecting an invitation,” he said, voice dipped in silk and venom.
Elara swallowed the rising tide of panic, straightening with defiance. “What do you want, Damon?”
His lips curled into something that might have been a smile—or a warning. “The secret you’re guarding. It’s slippery, fragile… but I’ve caught a thread. One that leads me closer.”
She blinked, heart stalling mid-beat. Closer? How much did he know?
Damon stepped forward, the room shrinking around them. The scent of his cologne—cedar, smoke, something intoxicatingly dangerous—filled her senses. He always played the game too well.
“I doubt you think me a fool,” he continued, voice dropping an octave. “You have allies. Friends. But not all of them are who they claim to be. And one of them is mine.”
Elara’s mind raced. There was no time to spin theories. Every instinct warned: this was a trap. A challenge. A declaration that the dance had only just begun.
“Enough riddles,” she snapped, cracking her knuckles. “Name them. Who’s leaking to you?”
Damon’s smile sharpened into a blade. He reached into his jacket, producing a small, folded paper. Elara caught her breath as she recognized the crisp handwriting—Silas Moran.
“Silas,” she hissed, anger flaring hot and sudden. “You’ve betrayed me.”
Damon’s gaze held steady, ice beneath fire. “You trusted him. That was your first mistake.”
Suddenly, the flimsy wall between trust and ruin shattered. Elara’s mind pulled her backward—countless late nights planning events, late calls, shared secrets. Silas, her confidant, now a spider tangled in Damon’s web.
“How deep are you in this, Silas?” she demanded, fisting the paper. “What’s his price?”
The silence that followed was thick, suffocating.
Damon leaned in, voice a dangerous murmur. “Enough that he’s come to a crossroads. You’ll see him soon. And so will I.”
Elara’s stomach twisted, bile rising. His words weren’t a threat—they were a promise.
Before she could respond, footsteps echoed—faint, deliberate—approaching from the corridor outside.
Damon’s eyes narrowed, and with a swift motion, he flicked a card onto the floor before slipping away into the shadows.
Elara stared down at the card—black, matte, embossed with a single emblem: a serpent coiled around a shattered crown.
Her heart thundered with a new, brutal awareness. The web was wider than she imagined.
And sitting in the center was the one she thought she knew.
The footsteps grew louder. The door handle twisted.
“Come on. I’m waiting,” a cold voice purred from the threshold.
Elara’s breath hitched, every muscle coiled. The traitor stepped inside, eyes glittering with ruthless calculation.
“No more games, Elara,” Silas said, voice low, deadly. “It’s time to choose—your future… or your secrets.”
