Chapter 6
Elara’s knuckles whitened as she clenched her phone, the glow fading from the screen but not the chill that spread through her veins. Damon’s eyes were no less stormy—a dark thundercloud gathering behind the polished allure. For a breath, silence swallowed the room, thick and suffocating, like the moment before a storm crashes down.
Then a voice—unsafe, brittle, barely a whisper—escaped from Elara’s throat.
“Someone knows.”
Damon’s gaze sharpened. “You think they’re close?”
She barely nodded, her thoughts a frantic web. The message hadn’t just come from anywhere. It had come through her. The phone number was masked, but the tone—the way it carried a veiled personal menace—it was intimate. Too intimate.
“We have one day,” Elara said, voice low, threading urgency into every word. “One day before this whole event explodes right in my face.”
Her mind raced through the impossibilities. The gala was a week’s worth of sweat and sleepless nights crystallized into a high-stakes event. VIP clients. Press. Damon's rivals watching like vultures. If the logistics blew, it wouldn’t just be a disaster; it would be a public crucifixion. And then the secret—the one she’d fought so hard to bury—would drag her down into oblivion.
She twisted toward Damon, the battle lines clear once more. “We need to talk logistics. Now.”
He smirked, the hunger for control sparking in his gaze. “After all this time, Elara, still playing the desperate protector.”
But his smirk faltered, the tension tightening between them like a wire pulling taut. He raised his phone. “Let’s see if we can spot the saboteur before they make their move.”
— — — The penthouse command center throbbed with flickering screens and scattered papers, a battlefield of tangled plans and backup strategies. Elara had her event team working overtime, yet her heart hammered with a sick certainty: sabotage was already in play, shadows moving through the seams of her carefully constructed world.
She paced, the cool glass windows fogging under her breath. Outside, the city glittered—sharp, indifferent—while inside, the cold coil of betrayal wrapped tighter around her chest.
Her assistant, Mia, was at the laptop, fingers flying, eyes narrowed. “I retraced all delivery routes. Nothing out of place.”
Elara’s jaw clenched. “And the vendor’s security footage?”
“Corrupted. The server’s wiped clean. Could be a glitch, but…” Mia’s voice dropped. “Or it could be intentional.”
Intentional. The word scraped against Elara’s nerves like broken glass.
“Means someone’s inside,” Damon muttered from across the room, stepping nearer. His tone was a razor’s edge—less about accusation, more about calculated inevitability.
Elara didn’t flinch. “Someone I trusted.”
Mia’s screen blinked again—a new alert. “Wait. Check this out.” The index for delivery manifests had an extra name. Someone new had signed in for unpacking the equipment yesterday night. A name Elara didn’t recognize.
“Who?” Elara demanded.
Mia’s voice dropped to a whisper, as if the walls themselves might eavesdrop.
“Cassie. Your assistant.”
Elara froze mid-step. Cassie—the quiet one. The one who had shadowed her every meeting and late-night call these past months. The one Elara had instinctively trusted with everything.
Damon’s smirk vanished completely. “Care to explain?”
Elara held her breath, the room narrowing to the pulse on the back of her neck. Was it possible? Cassie? The thought spun madness, but the data was clear.
“We need to find her,” Elara said, heart a storm of disbelief and dread.
Suddenly, Mia’s urgent whisper cracked the silence. “I just got an encrypted message from Cassie’s phone.”
Elara snatched the device. Her fingers trembled as she decoded the brief note:
“I had no choice. It’s not what you think—but they’re watching us all. Trust no one.”
The threat wasn’t just external anymore. It had burrowed inside, dark and poisonous.
Elara exchanged a glance with Damon, the fragile truce between them crystallizing into iron.
The clock ticked. Outside, the city breathed. Inside, betrayal clenched its fist tighter.
And somewhere, hidden in shadows, Cassie was waiting—for what, Elara didn’t yet dare to guess.
A sharp knock echoed at the door—then silence.
Elara’s pulse slammed against her ribs as she moved forward, breath catching.
The past wasn’t done with her. The secret wasn’t done with her.
And the darkness was closing in fast.
