Chapter 16
The words hung between them, thick and radioactive, burning in the tight air of the penthouse. Damon’s eyes, dark pits of storm-cloud anticipation, never blinked. Elara’s fingers curled into fists at her sides, nails digging crescents of pain into her palms.
A clock ticked somewhere—too loud, too intrusive in the suffocating silence.
Her breath caught; the fragile calm shattered into glittering shards she dared not touch. She stepped back, every movement precise as a blade’s edge, the city’s lights beyond the glass walls casting fractured reflections across her face. She wasn’t sure who was more dangerous—the man who stood before her or the secret gnawing quietly in her veins.
“You said the war’s just beginning,” she whispered, voice thin, raw. “So what do you want from me, Damon? Control? Submission? Something worse?”
Damon smirked, a slow, practiced curl of his lips that tried to mask the flicker beneath—the faint twitch of impatience, or maybe respect. “I want the truth, Elara. Not the lies you dress in like armor. I want the real you.”
Real.
The single word echoed in her mind, cracking open the carefully sealed doors she had locked tight for years.
She swallowed past the lump lodged stubbornly in her throat. “You don’t want who I really am. You want the weapon I represent.”
“Maybe.”
His gaze dropped to the floor, momentarily caught in its own betrayal.
For the first time, the veneer between them thinned—a fragile truce shimmering like glass under threat of a storm.
Elara’s pulse hammered in her ears, violent, raw. The penthouse felt suddenly claustrophobic, the sprawling cityscape outside pressing in like a sea of glittering vultures waiting for her to stumble.
“I’m tired of the endless game,” she admitted, voice trembling only once. “Tired of pretending. Maybe… maybe we’re both chasing something impossible.”
Damon’s eyes narrowed—was it vulnerability, or calculation? “Impossible doesn’t scare me.”
Her laugh was bitter, sharp. “Then why are you here? To scare me? To own me?”
He leaned forward, the scent of his cologne sharp and intoxicating—a mix of citrus and something darker, like leather stitched with charcoal smoke. “Neither. To warn you.”
The word struck her like a whip crack.
“Warn me?”
His expression flickered with unease. “There’s a storm gathering in my house, Elara. A deadly one. If you think secrets are poison, you haven’t seen this venom yet.”
Her stomach abruptly clenched, icy dread spiraling down her spine. She stepped closer, heart pounding against ribs like a wild thing desperate to escape.
“Who?”
Damon’s gaze locked with hers, razor-sharp. “People you trusted. People I trusted. A conspiracy twisted deep in the Blackwood veins.”
The name tasted like ash on her tongue.
Her fingers itched, aching to reach for the vulnerability flickering across his hard facade. She wanted to believe it was real—wanted to let down her walls even for a heartbeat.
But the world they lived in was a battlefield painted in shadows. Trust was the currency no one spent lightly.
“So,” she said, voice low, steeped in reluctant acceptance, “we’re trapped, aren’t we? Allies by necessity, enemies by instinct.”
Damon’s smirk returned, jagged as broken glass. “Exactly.”
The electric charge between them surged—neither friend nor foe but something volatile, raw, a spark threatening to ignite or consume.
Before she could find words, her phone buzzed violently in her clutch.
She pulled it out with trembling hands, eyes flickering over the message with sharp disbelief.
From an unknown number, the text read:
"They know. The target isn’t you—it’s him. But the flames will reach us all. Trust no one, Elara."
Her breath hitched, cold fingers trembling as she stared down the words. The room seemed to tilt, shadows deepening into dark tendrils creeping closer.
Damon’s eyes darted to her, a storm breaking in their depths.
Her voice barely a whisper, “This just became a war we both can’t afford to lose.”
Before she could speak again, the sharp echo of a distant siren sliced through the night, and the city’s glittering facade blurred into darkness.
And somewhere deep in the veins of the Blackwood empire, a killer moved closer.
