Chapter 15
Damon’s gaze lingered on Elara like a shadow stretched too long, flickering uncertainly between threat and something almost... fragile. The weight between them thickened until the air itself seemed suffocating, heavy with truths no one dared voice aloud.
Her breath caught, shallow, serrated. The low hum of city life spilled in from the balcony—sirens wailing distantly, the crackle of neon lights buzzing overhead, the faint curl of cold wind slipping through the cracks of the glass. It felt colder here, beneath his gaze.
“Why do you tremble?” Damon’s voice was a razor wrapped in velvet, cutting through the silence yet holding back a tremor Elara hadn’t expected.
Her fingers curled tight, nails digging into palms. “I’m not trembling.”
His eyes narrowed, piercing. “Doesn’t feel that way.”
Her heart hammered, pulse raging as memories she buried clawed upward—darker than the night beyond the cityscape sprawled at their feet. The secret she protected like a second skin, fragile and deadly, threatened to unravel in this moment.
“I don’t trust you.” The words nearly spilled in a brittle whisper, but they settled heavily between them.
Damon stepped closer, the sharp scent of his cologne—cedarwood and smoke—consuming the space. His facade cracked, just barely, shadows folding back a corner of cold steel to reveal vulnerability.
“What if I told you I’m not the enemy you think I am?”
She lifted brows, disbelief flickering. His smile was faint but genuine, like a moonlight fracture on blackglass. “You expect me to believe that now?”
He looked away, jaw tightening. “No. But you should. Because the truth... the truth that’s burning us both—it's bigger than you, bigger than me.”
Elara’s chest tightened, suspicion warring with a strange surge of empathy. For the first time, the walls encasing Damon’s relentless ambition seemed porous, human.
“Tell me.”
Damon hesitated, eyes flicking down to the floor, voice dropping to a bare thread. “I lost someone. Someone I swore I’d protect.”
His admission shattered something brittle inside her, cold and brittle like ice fracturing underfoot. The steely impenetrability she expected from Damon now shattered by a glimpse of raw pain.
“Who?”
“Someone who bore the weight of my sins when I couldn’t.”
Her breath stuttered. The city’s distant chaos blurred into a dull roar, like thunder behind a storm breaking through. Elara’s resolve wavered—a fissure tearing through every carefully built wall.
“You’re not just a man with a pile of power and no conscience.” Her voice cracked, the mask slipping as desperation bled through. “You’re someone who’s already lost everything.”
Damon’s eyes locked on hers, vulnerability and steel battling in a lethal dance. “If you protect your secret, then maybe… maybe we’re fighting the same war.”
A knock thrummed at the door, sharp and urgent—breaking the fragile silence into shards. Damon’s gaze sharpened again, the mask sliding back effortlessly.
But the crack remained, deep and threatening.
“The war’s just beginning, Elara.”
And he wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.
