Chapter 13

Breaking Point

The cold press of reality sank into Elara’s bones before her mind could catch up. The cacophony of shutters, shouted questions, and relentless flashes bombarded her senses like a storm of shards. Somewhere in the chaos, her breath caught—sharp, ragged, slicing the air tight around her ribs.

Her fingers trembled, the clutch on her purse loosening until it dropped like dead weight against the marble floor. The metallic clang underfoot echoed like a gunshot in the cavernous lobby, drawing more jolts from the waiting press.

She wanted to turn, to scream at them to stop—but every step felt like wading through quicksand. Words spilled from the microphones—Who is she hiding? What is the secret? How deep does the betrayal run?—each one a hammer blow against her carefully built fortress.

Behind the glass walls of the Blackwood Tower lobby, corporate sharks grinned like jackals scenting blood. Cameras weren’t merely recording; they were devouring, chewing through every whispered lie she'd ever told herself about control, about safety.

“Miss Reed,” a reporter pressed, voice rough with ambition. “How do you respond to these allegations? Will the Reed Group deny any connection to the scandal?”

Her jaw clenched, a phantom ache flickering in her chest. The scandal wasn’t just a rumor anymore—it was flesh and blood, shoved into the glaring light to be dissected.

“Enough!” A voice, low and authoritarian, cut through the tempest.

Damon Blackwood stepped forward, the storm around them momentarily wilting beneath his sharp presence. His gaze locked onto hers, a jagged fracture of steel and something tangled and unreadable lurking beneath.

“Elara,” he said, voice tight, words a blade disguised as silk. “This isn’t your arena anymore.”

Her throat tightened. His proximity was a storm itself—dangerous, volatile, impossible to turn away from.

“This city doesn’t forgive secrets, and neither will I,” Damon continued, eyes simmering. “You’re playing a fire too close to the line, and if you don’t back away now, it will consume both of us.”

Her heartbeat slammed against her ribs, wild and relentless. “You don’t get to decide that.”

He smiled then, a cruel curl born of decades of battle—slick, cold, merciless. “Maybe not. But I take what I want.”

The crowd beyond the glass fractured into murmurs and murmurs into whispers. Two titans, locked in a cruel dance with stakes higher than ever.

Elara’s pulse thundered, memories clawing at her mind—of whispered threats, of shadows in boardrooms where fortunes changed hands and lives shattered without a sound. Now, every lie was unraveling in the acid light.

“Why?” Her voice broke through the silence only between them. “Why won’t you let this go?”

Damon’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of something raw surfacing—furious, haunted. “Because it’s connected. Because it’s never just been about you.”

She swallowed hard, a cold sweat slick down her spine. “What are you talking about?”

His hand tightened around a slim envelope, fingers flexing with grim purpose.

“You think I’m blind? That secret you’re hiding... it ties into my own past—buried deeper than any of us dared to stir. You’ve been running from ghosts nobody else remembers.”

The weight of the words crashed over her like a tidal wave, shattering the fragile boundary between them.

A breath held too long. A silence carved in stone.

Then Damon stepped back, eyes flashing with a dangerous promise. “We end this now, Elara. One way or another.”

She met his gaze, fiery and unyielding.

“Then we’re done.”

Without another word, she spun on her heel and vanished into the churning crowd of flashing cameras, a single thought burning through her like fire:

If Damon was right—if her secret was connected to his past—a war was no longer avoidable.

And in that moment, beneath the glittering city skyline, two bitter hearts shattered on the edge of a secret that could ignite everything.

The envelope slipped from Damon’s grasp, fluttering open on the polished floor—a faded photograph peeking from within.

His eyes widened.

Because the face staring back was Elara’s.

And the name scrawled on the back was his own.
