Chapter 7
Elara’s breath hitched, her chest tightening like a vice as the silhouette slipped forward, merging with the faint slant of moonlight bleeding through cracked blinds. The air between them seemed to snap—a live wire humming with unspoken danger.
“Lysa?” Her voice barely escaped in a whisper, brittle and questioning.
The figure paused. For a heartbeat, the room held its breath.
Then — a flicker of a smile, quick as a knife slash — and the shadow stepped into the dim glow.
Lysa’s eyes, always bright and earnest, now shimmered with something colder, unreadable. She swallowed, fingers twitching at the edge of her sleeve.
“I didn’t expect you to be listening,” she said, voice smooth but distant.
Elara’s skin prickled. No, this wasn’t the Lysa she’d trusted. The friend who’d shared stolen secrets at midnight, who’d promised to shield her from the darkness—they were miles apart beneath this fragile truce.
“Why are you hiding things?” Elara pressed, stepping closer, the faint scent of jasmine wafting from Lysa’s collarbone turning sharp, unnatural. “You shut down every time I ask, dodging like you’ve got something to lose. What are you keeping from me?”
Lysa’s jaw clenched. Her eyes darted to the cracked window—a silver sliver of streetlamp—and then flicked back to Elara’s face. The tension coiled between them like a living thing, thick enough to choke.
“I’m protecting you,” Lysa murmured, voice barely steady. “There are things you don’t understand—things that aren’t safe to know.”
Elara’s laugh was brittle. “Safe? You think it’s safe to lie to me?”
“No,” Lysa said quickly, voice dropping. “But the truth... sometimes it’s the most dangerous weapon.”
A sharp scrape interrupted them—the telltale beep of a device unlocking. Lysa's hand slipped under the sleeve of her jacket, already searching. Her breath caught.
“Lysa, what—?”
Suddenly, she yanked her arm back, clutching a sleek tablet, its screen glowing faintly in the dim room.
“Don’t,” Lysa whispered, but her fingers trembled, betraying her resolve.
Elara’s gaze fixed on the device, heart hammering. The glow revealed something—an icon, encrypted files labeled in a script she recognized only too well. Ciphers and codes tangled in a silent throe of secrets.
Her breath hitched. This wasn’t just hiding—it was a vault of betrayals.
“Lysa… what is this?” Her voice cracked, half-pleading, half-accusing.
Lysa’s face blurred, a rush of rainclouds. “You don’t want to see this…”
But Elara reached out, trembling fingers brushing the edge of the tablet. Her mind raced—burning with desperate questions.
Who else had access? What truths had Lysa buried beneath layers of loyalty and lies?
The screen flickered, pulsing with silent threat.
And in the cold hum of that moment, Elara realized one brutal fact: the shadows moving beneath the velvet veil were darker—and far more dangerous—than she had imagined.
