Whispers of the Past

The marketplace's clamorous heartbeat lingered, pounding in Elara's ears like a dull, relentless drum. She pressed her back against the cracked brick wall behind a vendor’s stall—half-buried beneath a crumpled tarp—and sucked in air shallow and brittle, each breath sharpening the acute ache in her side. The cold grit of dust bit through her blouse, and the scent of spilt spices mixed with rain-stale garbage curdled in the night air.

Her fingers trembled as she reached into the inner pocket of her worn leather jacket. Cold metal pressed under her palm, a fragile tether to a past she barely dared remember.

A folded piece of parchment.

The ink was faded but unmistakable, the curl of a familiar, elegant script curling beneath her fingertips. She unfolded the letter carefully, reverence held tight between thumb and forefinger.

The lamplight flickered overhead, casting trembling yellow shadows that danced across the cramped alley. The world shrank until everything else faded—only her and the letter.

“My dearest Elara," the ink whispered, jagged and deliberate, "if ever these words find you, it means the shadows have grown too thick. You were taken from us to protect your birthright, but the blood running through your veins still sings of Silvercrest.”

Her breath caught, throat tightening as a storm of raw emotion churned beneath her ribs. Hand hovering, trembling just so, she pressed the paper flat against the wall to steady herself. The words folded themselves around her heart with cold certainty. Her true name—the name stolen along with her past—hovered between the lines like a secret waiting to ignite.

“Trust no one in the court of Lysander Crowe. Keep the velvet veil close, for beneath it lies not just a face, but a kingdom’s hope.”

The alley’s stench seemed suddenly suffocating.

Elara’s heartbeat thudded like a frantic drum, thick and thunderous. The distant car horns and laughter from riverfront clubs felt leagues away, the collision between two worlds she balanced perilously tight.

Her fingers traced the letter’s edges, trembling as electric unease crawled up her spine.

A soft sound—footsteps—crackled on loose gravel behind her.

She whipped around, eyes narrowing, searching the murk. The alley stretched empty, save for flickering neon signs bleeding faint blue light onto cracked concrete.

“Who's there?” Her voice was low but steady, an instinctive shield against the swelling panic.

No answer.

Only the scrape of shoes stopping just beyond the alley’s entrance.

Elara swallowed the knot in her throat and slid deeper into shadow—and then the world tilted. A slip of cloth snagged the letter from her fingers in one fluid, lightning-fast motion.

“Hey!” she snapped, lunging forward—

But the thief was gone before her hand found anything but empty air.

Panic glittered—sharp, feverish—in her chest. Breath ragged, she staggered forward, eyes darting to the now-blank wall where the letter had hung like a fragile promise.

Her voice caught on an invisible thread, tangled between rage and desperation.

“Stop!”

Only silence answered.

The echo of vanished footsteps melded into the distant hum of the city, closing over the alley like a shroud.

Elara sank to her knees, fingers twitching where the letter had been stolen.

The velvet veil wavered, brittle as the letter’s fading words.

Somewhere, deeper in the city’s pulsing veins, secrets stirred awake.

And so did danger.
