Chapter 17
The footsteps halted. Silence swallowed the tunnel like sudden darkness. Elara’s breath hitched, a fragile whisper against the cavern’s cold walls. Her fingers curled into fists, nails biting into her palms, anchoring herself to the moment.
“Easy, easy.” The voice was low—gravel with a smooth edge, dripping with something dangerous yet familiar. "No need to hide in the shadows, Thornblade."
Her blood froze. The name—spoken softly, hungry—cut through the gloom, sharper than any knife. Elara forced her shoulders down, refusing to betray terror.
A shape emerged. Not a ghost, not a hunter—but an unexpected ally. Nearly swallowed by the dark, the man’s face flickered into view under the flickering neon stray light: slim, sharp-featured, eyes glinting with unmistakable cunning.
“Darian,” she breathed, muscles tensing.
He stepped closer, the scent of cigarette smoke and damp stone clinging to him like a second skin. “I’ve been waiting.”
Elara’s fingers twitched toward her concealed blade beneath her jacket, but Darian raised a gloved hand—a silent plea to hold still.
“What do you want?” Her voice was steady, laced with steel.
“Come on, Elara. We both know Lysander Crowe isn’t going to spill secrets just because you flash a glare.” His voice slid between mockery and pragmatism. “I’m offering a way in—inside Silvercrest’s darkest corners.”
“Why?” Her eyes narrowed, sharp as broken glass. “Why help me?”
A slow grin tugged at Darian’s lips, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Because I need him gone as much as you do. The empire’s rotten from top to bottom.”
The cavern settled around them like a predator stalking its prey. Elara’s mind raced. Trust was a currency she couldn’t afford to spend blindly, especially not with someone like Darian. A whisper ran through the depths—a warning she couldn't ignore.
“Talk.” Her voice cracked the silence like thunder.
He produced a small device from the inside pocket of his leather coat—a familiar shimmer of stolen data. “This is a fragment of what’s hidden beneath Lysander’s empire. Names, dates, movements. Dirt so deep it’ll blow your mind.”
Elara’s pulse surged. “Why hand me this?”
His eyes flicked to a distant exit, shadowed by creeping mist. “Because he’s sniffing around you. Crowe’s jigsaw puzzle just got a missing piece—you.”
The air thickened between them, tension bristling like static. Elara weighed every second, every calculating breath. The city above – glittering with lies and secrets – held no mercy for the weak.
“If I’m doing this,” she stated, voice low but unyielding, “Then I need more than whispers and scraps.”
Darian’s smile shuttered. He stepped closer, lowering his voice to a brutal whisper, “Then prove Damien’s not the snake I think he is.”
A shiver prickled down Elara’s spine. Proof. Trust baited on a knife’s edge.
Her throat tightened. This alliance—though reckless—might be the thread to unravel a kingdom masked in velvet deception.
A single nod was all she gave before the weight of the unknown pressed down.
Darian’s eyes locked onto hers, cold and searching.
“Show me.”
