Chapter 13
The door shut behind them with a muted click that seemed to swallow all light. Elara’s eyes adjusted to the dimness of Damien’s private study—a small sanctum tucked behind the apartment’s dazzling facade, where papers and secrets littered every surface.
His breath was still shallow, the ghost of tension lingering in the tight line of his jaw. With a deliberate motion, he closed the door, the lock clicking into place icy and final.
Elara’s pulse drummed loud enough to drown out the city beyond these walls—a distant roar that now sounded improbably peaceful.
“We have to find something,” Damien muttered, running a hand through his dark curls as if trying to smooth away more than just disarray. “Something that untangles this mess.”
Elara didn’t respond immediately, her fingers tracing the delicate edge of a worn leather-bound ledger stacked amid old files. The air smelled faintly of tobacco and dust, the oppressive weight of years settled into every corner.
Her eyes caught a cracked frame on a cluttered shelf—a sepia-toned photograph, edges curled and stained like a memory bleeding through time. The image showed stiff suits and stern faces, but what froze her in place was the unmistakable silhouette of a manor behind them, its gates twisted iron like the claws of a watching beast.
“Who…?” she whispered.
Damien glanced up, curiosity flickering. “That’s Blackwood Estate, my family’s ancestral home. Been in my line a long time.”
“But the man in front… the one next to your great-grandfather,” Elara’s voice caught, tightening into a knot of disbelief, “—he’s wearing the Crowe family signet ring.”
Damien blinked, stepping closer. “No way. That’s… Lysander’s grandfather.”
Their gazes locked, charged with an unspoken question: what did that alliance mean?
Elara reached for the fragile photo, fingers trembling as she flipped it over. An inked caption revealed a date nearly a century old—1923. A decade before the whispered betrayals that fractured both families.
“Why would they be together?” Damien’s voice broke the silence, the edge of betrayal sharpening. “I thought the Crowes and Blackwoods were enemies.”
A flicker of anger sparked behind Elara’s eyes, the cold certainty of hidden alliances clawing at her doubts. “Sometimes enemies wear the same mask, Damien. When money and power are at stake, yesterday’s foes become tomorrow’s puppeteers.”
He swallowed hard, the weight of history pressing down like a stone on fragile glass.
Elara’s fingers traced the swirl of the Crowe ring engraved deep into the photo’s grain. A secret buried beneath decades of lies was breathing again, a thread pulling them deeper into shadows.
Suddenly, an abrupt knock shattered the moment—a sharp rap echoing through the quiet study, brittle and deliberate.
Neither moved immediately. The world outside the locked door had not waited, had not softened.
The knock came again. Louder. Insistent.
Elara exchanged a glance with Damien—a silent warning and a shared dread. Whoever was on the other side knew.
Damien’s hand hovered near the door, tension thrumming in his veins.
Elara held her breath.
And then—
The door rattled violently, a command rather than a question.
“Open up! Now!” a gravelly voice barked from beyond, fragmenting the fragile calm into shards of fear.
Elara’s heart slammed against her ribs as the cold truth sunk in: the past wasn’t just history. It was hunting them, closing in under the velvet veil of night.
She gripped Damien’s arm, voice a razor’s edge.
“We’re not alone. And the Blackwood connection isn’t just a story anymore.”
As the lock clicked beneath Lysander’s shadowed silhouette outside, Elara realized one thing.
The secrets tied to Damien’s blood—and to her own—were about to erupt.
And there was no turning back.
