Chapter 2

Frost and Fire

Elara’s lungs seized—tight, ragged gasps clawing at raw air, each breath a jagged shard beneath her ribs.

The sterile hum of the boardroom’s air conditioning blended with the distant clatter of heels on marble. The sharp scent of polished wood and stale perfume clawed at her senses, tethering her to the freezing glass cage she’d just stepped into: the heart of her family’s undoing.

Her pulse hammered a savage rhythm against her temples. She forced her gaze up, meeting the circle of stony eyes circled around the elongated oak table like vultures sizing prey.

At the far end, Ronan Hayes sat with his usual, infuriatingly perfect calm. The city skyline sprawled behind him, but it might as well have been a wall of ice; his expression carved from chilled obsidian. A servant of winter itself.

“Elara Blackthorn,” he said, voice smooth and low, but every syllable landed like a blade. “You waltz in here like you own the room. Tell me—has desperation wrapped your tongue, or is this another act?”

The room shifted, eyes flicking between them. A breath caught in Elara’s throat, and she forced her lips to steady.

Desperation? No. Determination.

She squared her shoulders. “I’m here because Blackthorn Industries is not finished.” Her voice cracked on the last word but hardened instantly. “Not while I draw breath.”

Ronan’s dark eyes narrowed, long lashes casting a fleeting shadow. “Ambition’s a dangerous game for someone with everything to lose.”

“Elara,” a board member—an old loyalist to the Blackthorn name—intervened with a cautious cough, “we all want what’s best for the company. But reckless pride won’t rebuild an empire.”

A faint smile, sharp and brittle, flickered across Elara’s lips. “Better reckless pride than complacent rot.” She glanced at the faces hardened by corporate bruises, then fixed her gaze on Ronan again. “You pretended to banish me from this building, but I’m still standing. And that terrifies you.”

He leaned forward just enough for the light to catch the subtle twitch of his jaw. “You think I’m afraid.” His voice dropped. “But I’m not. I’m methodical. Patient. I study weaknesses like a hunter stalks prey.”

A ripple passed across Elara’s mind. The hunter. The prey.

“And what vulnerabilities might this proud heiress have?” she challenged, stepping closer into the circle of frost that seemed to radiate from Ronan himself.

He waited a heartbeat, voice dropping even lower, almost a murmur. “Your past. The thorn that still pierces your side.”

A cold shiver traced her spine, unbidden and fierce.

“Care to elaborate?” The question was a dare.

Ronan’s smile curved like a venomous rose. “Let’s just say the cracks you try to hide… I hold the hammer. And I won’t hesitate to smash them wide open.”

Silence fell like a suffocating fog. The boardroom felt smaller, the walls closing in as if the room itself held its breath.

Elara’s fingers clenched the edge of the table. The air tasted like iron and broken promises.

A sharp knock shattered the tense tableau.

The door swung open just a crack.

A messenger’s pale face slipped through, urgency pulsing from the flutter of his eyelids.

“The preliminary audit report is in, Ms. Blackthorn.”

Every eye turned to her. The report. The next move. The unraveling thread.

Elara’s world narrowed to a pinprick of light—danger and opportunity bleeding into one.

And beneath that fragile glow, the war between frost and fire had only just begun.
