Chapter 15
The tremor that rattled Elara’s arms wasn’t from cold. It coiled inside her—sharp, squeezing, unrelenting. Her breath came jagged, each inhale a shallow scrape against the rawness in her chest. She stood motionless on the jagged edge of her penthouse balcony, the city sprawled beneath her like a glittering beast, oblivious to the storm tightening its grip around her throat.
Ronan’s name was a venomous pulse in her mind. His secrets—fractured, bleeding, exposed. But the truth she’d just unearthed was worse. The puppeteer. Not him. Someone else. Someone whose smile haunted her like a ghost she couldn’t outrun.
Elara’s fingers tightened around the cold steel railing. The city lights blurred beneath her tears; they slipped silent and bitter, tracing cold lines down her cheeks. She wanted to scream—wanted to shatter the glass, shout the name too dangerous to say aloud. But her voice was locked behind a barricade of disbelief.
A soft click from behind shattered the stillness.
“Hard to breathe out here, isn’t it?”
She spun, eyes narrowing. The dark figure draped in the faint glow of moonlight was nothing like what she expected.
Marcel.
He stepped forward, his tailored suit immaculate, but his eyes unreadable, calculating.
“I didn’t expect you,” she said, voice sharp as broken glass.
“Neither did I,” he smiled—a slash of charm with a razor edge.
Elara’s gaze cut through the dim, searching for lies. “You’re the hand behind this. The one pulling the strings to collapse both our houses. Why?”
Marcel’s smile twitched, like a snake curious if she’d bite.
“Why? The game of empires never has just one player, Elara. Your family’s downfall... it was never about you or Ronan. It was about me protecting what’s mine.”
A bitter laugh escaped her. “You think destroying everything is protection?”
He stepped closer, the scent of expensive cologne mingling with something darker—cigarette smoke and old secrets. “You think this is about you? About justice?”
“No. But it’s about truth.” Her eyes flared fire now. “And I will unmask every cruel move you made.”
Marcel’s expression hardened. “It’s a dangerous game, Blackthorn. You’re playing in a world where alliances shift like sand.”
“Then I’ll be the storm that reshapes the land.”
He regarded her with something close to admiration, then cold dismissal.
“But beware—I’m offering you a choice.”
Elara bristled. “What choice?”
“Walk away. Let this die. Protect what little you have left. Or fight—and watch your family’s legacy be reduced to ash.”
Her heart slam-danced in her chest. Ash. The word ignited a blaze beneath frozen fear.
Before she could reply, Marcel reached into his jacket, pulling out an envelope, its wax seal cracked but still clearly hers.
Her name etched in flowing script on the front.
“I’ll be in touch.”
He vanished into the night.
Elara’s trembling hands caught the envelope. She tore it open, and inside—a single sheet of paper.
The words burned into her like acid:
If you reveal what you know, your family dies.
She folded the letter, pressing it to her lips. Behind her, the city lights mocked her resolve.
Safe—or slaughtered.
The war was far from over. And the most ruthless move was yet to come.
