Chapter 13

Beneath the Surface

The burnt taste of smoke still clung to Elara’s tongue as she let herself fall against the cold marble wall of Ronan’s penthouse foyer. The chaos of the boardroom fight—the whispered slashes of betrayal, the venomous glances, the acrid threat in the air—seemed to have cracked wide open the fragile shell she’d worn like armor all these years.

Ronan stood a breath away, his sharp suit rumpled, a crease of exhaustion deepening the lines at his eyes. For the first time, the steel behind his gaze faltered.

“We should never have been enemies,” he murmured, voice raw and thick.

Elara’s heart pounded unevenly, caught between the rush of adrenaline and a whisper of something she thought dead: hope.

“I thought I hated you,” she said, voice barely above a gasp. “But… maybe I only hated what you forced me to become.”

His laugh was hollow, a shattering sound that bent the tense air between them.

“Look at us,” he said, moving closer, his breath brushing her ear, “two fractured pieces clawing for control of a kingdom built on broken promises.”

The scent of his cologne—cedarwood, cold smoke, something unmistakably raw—danced in the dim light. It pulled at the edges of memories Elara had long buried: nights spent in shadows, whispered conversations weighted with regret.

Her fingers trembled beneath his steady gaze. The war didn’t pause, but for this sliver of time, they found a fragile truce nestled between past wounds and uncertain futures.

“Tell me,” she whispered, her voice cracking, “what really happened the night the Blackthorn empire fell?”

Ronan’s jaw tightened, muscles clenching under taut skin. His eyes flickered—pain, guilt, a storm—before he drew a slow breath.

“It wasn’t just corporate sabotage,” he confessed. “There was a debt… a betrayal deeper than any boardroom coup.” His voice dropped, raw like a confession to a confessional booth. “Something... I was part of. Something that bled into your family’s ruin.”

Elara’s breath hitched, the air shifting.

“You?” Her voice trembled with disbelief. “How could you...?”

“I wanted to protect my empire from collapsing under the same ruin,” he said, eyes burning into hers. “But in doing so, I became the architect of yours’ downfall.”

The walls of their shared history collapsed around them, dust swirling in the lazy light that filtered through towering windows. The hurt, the anger—it coalesced in the hollow spaces they both inhabited.

“I never wanted this,” Ronan breathed, the fight draining away to reveal raw vulnerability. “Not with you.”

Silence stretched, heavy and charged, until Elara’s fingers reached out hesitantly, tracing the sharp line of his jaw—the first touch between them that wasn’t a duel, never a battle cry.

His skin was warm beneath her fingertips, an anchor in the tempest of their unraveling.

“Maybe,” she said softly, “we’ve been fighting the wrong war.”

Before the fragile moment could deepen, the sharp pulse of an alarm shattered the quiet, red flashing lights painting the room in urgency.

Ronan’s body tensed like a coiled spring.

“Security breach,” he snapped, voice cold steel again, as the war they’d paused crashed back like a tidal wave.

“Elara, get back,” he ordered, but she stepped forward, fierce fire lighting her eyes.

“We face it together.”

He barely had time to respond before the penthouse doors exploded inward, shards of glass raining like cruel stars.

A black silhouette lunged at them both—a blur of menace and intent. Elara’s world fractured in an instant: the sickening crack of a fist, the sharp sting of betrayal in the air, the chaos spiraling beyond control.

And as the first strike connected, she caught the flash in Ronan’s eyes—a raw, unyielding promise:

This war was far from over.

The thorned rose had drawn its blood.
