Chapter 11
The steel door echoed shut with a finality that felt like a noose tightening around Elara’s lungs.
Her fingers—still trembling—clutched the thin folder as the dim light caught the edges of the photographs inside. Shattered smiles, veiled threats, names that tasted like poison on her tongue. The fragments of a ruined empire, stitched together by betrayal.
A sudden shuffling footsteps outside yanked her gaze to the door.
A pause.
Then, footsteps—purposeful, slow, deliberate—drawing closer.
Elara’s breath hitched, chest tightening with the cold sting of dread. Every instinct screamed to hide, but there was nowhere left to run.
The door shuddered under a force not unlike a battering ram. Her heart hammered—a trapped bird desperate for escape.
“Elara.” The voice was a low rumble through the crack, unmistakably Ronan’s. “Step away from the folder.”
She swallowed, the dry scrape in her throat deafening.
“Why?” Her voice cracked, exposing more than she wanted.
“Because you don’t know what that file sets off.” The door barely held. “There are people who would rather see you dead than holding those secrets.”
The lock gave a high-pitched rattle. The steel began inching inward.
Flashing uncertainty collided with sharp resolve. She shoved the folder beneath her jacket—a futile attempt at concealment.
“Ronan, if this is some trick—”
“No tricks.” His tone scoffed, but held an edge of urgency. “Get down.” The door swung open, and in the swallowed shadows behind him lurked three hulking men, faces carved from menace.
Elara’s breath stilled as the men poured into the room like a storm.
Without hesitation, Ronan stepped between her and them, a sword drawn from cold steel and colder intent.
His eyes—the piercing gray Elara had come to recognize as both weapon and shield—locked on hers. No warmth. No hesitation. Only the raw force of an opponent she’d never expected on her side.
The tallest of the intruders lunged. Ronan moved like liquid—fast, controlled—his fist landing with bone-cracking precision, snapping the man’s advance into surrender.
Elara’s pulse thrummed in sync with the chaos. The room reeked of sweat, fear, and the sharp bite of danger.
One of the men swore and reached for a concealed blade.
Ronan’s hand was faster, closing over the wrist with a viselike grip. Fingers tightened until a pained grunt slipped free.
Elara barely registered the body's weight collapsing near her, the acrid taste of blood sharp on her tongue.
Her mind scrambled—not for escape—but for understanding.
“Why are you protecting me?” The words barely escaped her lips.
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he shoved the last man toward the shattered window and slammed the frame shut behind him. The ghost of a smile flickered—quick as a spider’s silk—before hardening into a mask of indifference.
“Don’t mistake protection for alliance,” he said, voice clipped like broken glass.
She pressed her back to the cold wall, fingers clutching the folder closer.
“You just saved my life.”
His eyes darkened, shadows pooling beneath the surface. “I’m not that generous. Your enemies are mine. For now.”
The door slammed shut behind the retreating threat.
Silence settled like a storm about to break.
Elara’s gaze remained on Ronan—his figure tense but watching, calculating.
A sliver of something raw and unfamiliar edged beneath his usual cold facade—something unnervingly close to concern.
Her breath caught.
Could the enemy be her shield?
Or was this another trap she hadn’t yet seen?
She stepped forward, closing the distance between them, defiance sparking in her chest despite the tremor beneath.
Ronan’s jaw clenched, but the flicker in his gaze held fast—an unspoken truce hanging taut between them.
The folder’s weight pressed into her ribs like a promise.
The secrets still shadowed the room.
And Elara knew, with a shiver that ran deeper than fear, that the real battle was just beginning.
Then the knock came.
Sharp. Deliberate.
Echoing through the silence—and setting every nerve on edge.
