Chapter 7
Kaelen’s chest tightened until each breath was a gritty rasp. Mara’s stare hammered into him — not pleading anymore. Accusatory. Fractured. A mirror of every doubt clawing at his throat.
Behind her, the faint hum of the safehouse ventilation throbbed like a nerve exposed. The stale, recycled air clung heavy, thick as the silence between them. Kaelen’s fingers trembled, not from cold, but the weight pressing down inside him—an ancient fracture bruising to blackness.
He looked away, biting his tongue until the metallic taste bled. The room felt suffocating, walls edging closer. Only the dull glow from a cracked holo-screen leaned like a slouched sentinel on the dusty console beside them.
“Kaelen,” Mara’s voice broke sharper this time, brittle. “You have to tell me… something.”
His gaze drifted to a jagged scar beneath her cheekbone—soil from some forgotten battlefield, a relic of shared battles. He’d lied to protect her, yet the truth slipped like molten acid from his lips.
“I don’t want to lose you to suspicion.” He swallowed hard. “But you deserve the truth.”
Mara stepped back, her jaw rigid. “I’m already stepping into shadows I can’t chase back.”
He shifted toward the console, fingers ghosting over the cracked holo-interface. The glimmers of dead stars scattered across the screen reflected his haunted eyes.
Years ago, before the wings of his starship were clipped under the Dominion’s cold sentence, there had been something. A specter, buried deep in memory — a name whispered in secret corridors, a face hidden beneath layers of forgotten terror.
The Dominion’s archives—code-locked and iron-guarded—held pieces of his past he’d sworn never to wake. But tonight, a fracture cracked open within him, dragging those shards to the surface.
“I found something,” he said, voice low. “Fragments. From the Empire’s archives.”
Mara’s brows knitted. “You accessed the Dominion’s forbidden data? Kaelen, that’s—”
“Suicide.” He interrupted, the bitter truth biting sharper than any blade. “But worse. It’s not just the data. It’s what I found. About Ismara.”
Her breath caught as if the room had suddenly dropped to a sub-zero chill.
“She’s not just the Empress.” His voice dropped further. “There’s something... deeper. Something tied to me.”
For a heartbeat, Mara’s face paled. Then the flicker of distant stars outside the window seemed to pulse—a quiet rhythm to his racing mind.
“Show me.”
Kaelen tapped the console. Blueprints and decrypted logs flared to life, painting a mosaic of cryptic symbols, genetic sequences, and encrypted testimonies.
One file, marked only by a black phoenix emblem, drew the eye—twisted helix strands wrapped around imperial crests.
“Project Ashenborn.”
Mara’s eyes narrowed. “What is that?”
He exhaled slowly. “The Empire’s darkest secret. A bioengineering program. They weren’t just building soldiers.” His palm hovered as if touching invisible scars. “They were creating something else... something like me.”
Mara’s voice cracked. “You mean the mutation… the change no one talks about.”
Kaelen nodded. “I always thought I was alone. A freak hunting shadows of my own mind. But this… this ties Ismara directly. She’s not only the ruler — she’s the architect of that nightmare.”
The room seemed to close tighter, the gravity of revelation pressing down like suffocating smoke.
Suddenly, the holo-console buzzed erratically, flickering. A coded transmission interrupted—its signature unmistakable.
Kaelen’s heart jerked. The ID seared through his mind with brutal clarity: Empress Ismara Valen.
Mara’s hand shot out, fingers trembling as she reached to steady the console beside him.
They watched, frozen beneath glinting shadows, as the Empress’s striking figure flickered to life—regal and relentless in gleaming imperial violet.
Her voice rang clear, an icy blade through the static: “Kaelen Voss. Your many masks don’t hide the mutation I crafted in your blood. You cannot outrun the legacy I forged.”
Her eyes, cold and merciless, burned deep within the flickering holo—fathomless pools of power and menace.
The message ended with a sinister smile curling her lip: “Secrets are ashes in the wind, pilot. I see you.”
Silence slammed in their ears.
Mara’s voice was barely above a whisper, trembling. “She knows.”
Kaelen’s hand clenched, fingernails scraping skin. The mutant fire within sparked anew—fear tangled with something far more lethal: defiance.
The hunt was no longer just for redemption. It was for survival. Against an enemy woven deep into his very core.
And the Empress had just claimed the first move.

Outside, the stars stretched endless and cold. The shadows of Kaelen’s past crept closer—less shadows now, more like claws.
