Chapter 6
The air inside the sanctuary was fractured—shattered glass scattered across the hatchway floor, shards glinting like cruel stars under the flickering emergency lights. Kaelen’s chest heaved, lungs burning from the rapid intake of oxygen, muscles taut and aching, every nerve screaming alert.
A shadow stepped forward, its outline warped by the trembling illumination. Kaelen’s blurred vision sharpened. It was Arrin—his second-in-command, the man who rarely betrayed even a flicker of doubt.
“Was that you?” Kaelen’s voice was a harsh rasp, cracked from tension and adrenaline. “You’re the ghost I felt in the corridor.”
Arrin’s jaw tightened, the barest quiver at the corner of his mouth. “I’m not here to fight you.” His gaze glanced briefly past Kaelen, toward the others crouched near the console. “Not yet.”
Kaelen’s heartbeat thudded against his ribs. Every instinct screamed betrayal, but the cold steel of friendship had kept Arrin’s loyalty unyielding—until now, it seemed.
“You’re lying.” Kaelen stepped forward, fists clenched, voice low but edged with fury. “Who else is here with you? What did you bring with you?”
Arrin hesitated, eyes flicking to the side. The faint hum of the sanctuary’s life support thrummed—steady but strained. The scent of burnt circuitry mingled with the bitter tang of unease.
“I don’t have time to explain everything, but things have changed.” There was no warmth in Arrin’s words, only a chilling detachment. “The Dominion knows more than we think. They’re closer than we want, and...” His voice dropped to a harsh whisper, “I’ve made a choice. We can’t keep hiding in the shadows.”
Kaelen’s throat tightened as a surge of cold dread slithered through him. “You’ve betrayed us.” The accusation struck like a blade. “How long? How deep?”
Arrin swallowed, eyes locked onto Kaelen’s with something unreadable—regret, or resolve, or both? “It wasn’t supposed to go this far. I thought I was protecting you all... protecting the cause.”
From the corner, Lira stepped forward, her hand trembling around the rifle’s grip. Her sharp-eyed glare dissected Arrin like a surgeon poised over a wound. “Protecting us? By selling us to Ismara’s dogs? You’ve placed every single one of us under the Dominion’s boot.”
The room pulsed with tension, thick as suffocating smoke. Kaelen’s mind raced back to their last mission—the compromised transmissions, the sudden patrols closing in on rebel cells, the bloodied faces of fallen comrades whose deaths had seemed inexplicable.
Piece by agonizing piece, the fracture was clear.
“Why?” Kaelen demanded. “What does Ismara have on you? Or what did you promise her?”
The hunt for answers broke through Arrin’s facade. His eyes blazed—part fury, part despair. “They have something on me. Something I can't undo. But I’m trying to fix this, before it’s too late.”
Kaelen felt the freeze of betrayal dive deeper than any enemy laser. “Fix this?” he spat. “By stabbing us in the back from within?”
A sentinel alarm blared suddenly, the wailing shriek shattering the fragile silence into shards. Someone outside had tapped the ship’s comm frequencies—signaling the stalkers closing in. The sacrifice of trust was irreparably done.
Arrin’s hand fluttered toward his chest holster. “I never wanted blood between us. But that choice was taken from me.”
Kaelen’s jaw locked. “You’ve already drawn it, Arrin. Between us all.”
The flickering lights cast long, grotesque shadows on every anguished face—friends turned strangers by treachery’s cold whisper.
Suddenly, Kaelen’s closest confidant, Mara, crossed the room, her face pale, eyes burning with a storm of fury and disbelief.
“You knew about this, didn’t you?” Her voice was a blade, sharp and accusing. “All this time, you let him walk unchecked. You let the poison seep in. How many of us are already compromised?”
Kaelen’s breath hitched, muscles frozen as Mara’s words carved deeper than bullets ever could.
The room stilled in the suffocating weight of the accusation—before Mara’s gaze snapped back to him, chilling, relentless.
“Tell me it’s not true, Kaelen.”
But in the silence, the echo of betrayal answered louder.
