Chapter 4

The Failing Heart

Kaelen's breath raggedly scraped against the coarse bulkhead of the freighter’s cramped cockpit. The blinking hazard symbol—a jagged star fractured in crimson—etched itself into the soft pulse of his vision. Outside, the battered hull groaned against the silence of empty space.

His fingers clenched white-knuckled around the controls. The metallic tang of blood trickled from his cracked lips, burning the back of his throat.

"Focus," he rasped in a voice that barely felt his own.

But the shudder curling through his chest was no ordinary stress. It pulsed cold, some alien creature clawing beneath his ribs. A flaw, buried deep inside the strands of his DNA—an inheritance from the Dominion’s cruel experimentation—now blossoming into collapse.

A soft whirr from the ship’s life-support system hummed. Every heartbeat crashed and faded, like heavy stones dropped into an endless void.

The mission report blinked insistently on the holographic console. Information stolen from Dominion data banks—proof that could dismantle empress Ismara’s iron grip. The rebellion’s whisper of hope was folded into those lines of encrypted code.

He had to deliver it.

Across the durasteel corridor, the faint crackle of comms jumped to life. Lira’s voice broke through the static with desperate urgency.

"Kaelen! Status report. You’re overdue at rendezvous—"

Her words clipped off mid-message, replaced by a barely perceptible hitch that gnawed at him.

He swallowed hard, sweat carving sharp trails down his temple. "Systems stable," he lied. "Navigating to Point Echo. No contact yet."

A shudder seized him, the cockpit tilting unnaturally. His vision flickered, edges blurring.

The sterile buzz of the ship’s med-monitor sprang to life, alarms clawing up the frequency. Warnings flashed—heart irregularities, oxygen levels dipping. The freighter's cramped quarters suddenly roared with the sound of impending collapse.

“Not now,” Kaelen muttered, the bitter taste of fear settling into his gut.

His fingers trembled as he fumbled with the ship’s neural interface, seeking the emergency injector hidden beneath the control panel. The cryo-stabilizer serum—a banned biotech relic rumored to suppress genetic defects—was a whisper of forbidden promise.

The injector’s cold steel kissed his palm as he pressed the activation pad.

A sharp pulse surged through his veins, electricity and ice entwined. The fleet of agony within his chest seemed to ease, as if a ghost hand cupped his failing organs.

His breath whispered back into even rhythm. Pain still lingered like a shadow at dusk, but the crushing weight began to lift.

But it would not last.

The freighter's navigation console blinked erratically, signaling a power surge. A surge that could expose his location to Dominion patrols scouring the sector like predatory vultures. Time was fracturing into thin shards.

Lira’s voice came back, sharper now, boiling with worry under threads of static.

“Kaelen, get us out of that sector! Dominion reinforcements inbound. We can’t hold this position.”

He knew the routes—blackspace tunnels narrow as needles, hidden behind asteroid clusters. But with his heart faltering, even the smallest miscalculation could snatch him into the void forever.

His eyes snapped open, pupils dilated in fierce determination.

"No," he said, voice hoarse but unwavering. "The data gets through. Whatever it costs."

The sterile hum was punctuated by the faint snap of a distant explosion – a reminder of how thin the barrier was between life and death in this war.

The emergency injector’s glow pulsed once more, vibrant yet fleeting, as Kaelen gripped the controls tighter and pushed the freighter into a dangerous, uncharted route.

Beyond the viewport, the stars twisted into streaks of light, a celestial river dyed with ash and fire.

And deep inside, Kaelen’s heart, broken but not yet silent, beat on.

His survival was a rebellion in itself.

Until the next pulse.
