Chapter 15

Broken Chains

The cold seeped under Kaelen’s skin like a swarm of ghosts clawing at his marrow. Metallic restraints bit into his wrists and ankles, chained to scrap decking beneath a flickering pulse lamp. Every breath was a jagged shard, piercing the shroud of exhaustion wrapping around his chest. His lungs screamed for air, but it was the heavy, hollow silence of the containment cell that swallowed him whole.

Time. That was the cruel gift and merciless curse.

His fingers twitched against the cold steel, blistered and raw. The chains rattled faintly when he tried to move, a faint echo against the cavernous chamber. Somewhere distant, a mechanical hum hummed—steady, relentless—like the heartbeat of the prison itself.

Kaelen’s mind flared, memories spiraling—Ismara’s cold smile as she pronounced his sentence, the mocking tilt of her neck. The Dominion’s victory over his name, over his spirit. Until the moment the faintest ember inside him answered the lingering question he’d swallowed whole: Is time a beginning… or an end?

A sudden scraping echoed nearby. A shadow detached itself from the murk beyond the cell’s barred viewport. The staccato click of heels cast in a rigid rhythm. The guard’s face emerged, the hard angles grim beneath the harsh light. No mercy in those eyes. But then—

A faint glimmer traced the edge of the man’s hand. Forbidden tech.

Kaelen’s breath hitched, every nerve on fire. Years of whispered rumors, hidden in the darkest corners of the rebellion’s command: the synaptic disruptor. Illegal, devastating. A weapon that could fry neural locks, scramble circuits—even override Dominion security.

The guard slid the miniature device along the floor toward him, lips barely moving. “Your ride’s ready. But not without cost.”

Kaelen’s jaw clenched. Cost. Of course there was a cost.

With a trembling hand, he inched the disruptor closer, past the steel bars. Synth pulses hummed faintly beneath his skin, the mutation lying dormant for so long stirring, awakening. His eyes darted to the restraints locking him tight—the latest models programmed with nanofiber alloys and neural inhibitors. Designed to hold even the strongest mutants.

He barely hesitated. Fingers brushing the cold metal, he flipped the switch on the disruptor.

A high-pitched whine ripped through the air, shrill and piercing.

His wrists burned, metal twisting as nano-locks shattered with the brittle crunch of fractured circuits. Chains fell away with a clatter, spilling into the grated floor. The guard vanished, boots hammering retreat.

Free—but not without suffering.

Kaelen staggered up, every muscle protesting. A heat bloomed in his veins, venomous and wild. His mutation flared—powered now by the artificial technology, a reckless amplification coursing through his nerves.

Lights around the chamber blurred, sharp edges fracturing as his vision rippled. The walls seemed to breathe in his peripheral sight, shadows twisting into unspeakable shapes.

He tried to steady himself, fists pounding against the wall, nails digging into rusted plating.

“No,” he growled, voice raw and cracked. “Not now. Not here.”

But the hive storm inside him refused.

The synaptic disruptor wasn’t a silent ally—it was a hammer against his fragile biology, forcing unprecedented changes. His eyes flickered an unnatural shade of violet, pulse in his neck thudding with unnatural cadence.

His breath hitched as pain lanced from his spine to fingertips. Skin bubbled, veins pulsing with emerald light beneath the surface.

A guttural sound tore from his throat—part curses, part primal anguish.

The mutation is evolving beyond control.

He gritted his teeth, clutching the wall until knuckles whitened.

This wasn’t freedom. This was... transformation. A furious tempest he’d unleashed but could not yet command.

Kaelen’s heart thudded, adrenaline and fear tangled tight like writhing chains in his chest.

If he lost control now... if the mutation consumed him—

The cell door clanged echoing open ahead. Distant voices shouted. Heavy footsteps thundered closer.

Instinct roared. With a fractured breath, he sprinted into the dim corridor, the raw power within pulsing, erratic. His shadow stretched long and distorted against cold steel walls, warped reflections of a man on the edge of becoming something else.

Pain flared in every muscle. The mutation roared beneath his skin like a caged beast demanding release.

With a strangled cry, Kaelen pivoted sharply, eyes blazing violet in the flickering light.

Behind him—bloodthirsty pursuers closing the distance.

His body convulsed. Limbs spasmed uncontrollably.

The chains were broken.

But so was he.

And as the corridor spiraled into endless darkness, Kaelen Voss barely caught the edge of a terrifying truth—

He was no longer just a man.

His mutation had claimed him first.

The first crack in the celestial throne had shattered everything inside.

His scream echoed down the catacombs of the Dominion prison.

And somewhere beyond those cold walls, the galaxy held its breath.
