Chapter 9

A Rift Breach in the City

The screen's flicker died, plunging Jayden into a suffocating darkness broken only by the ragged thud of his own heartbeat hammering in his ears.

Outside, the cacophony bloomed—shouts, screams, the harsh crack of gunfire slicing through the choking urban night.

His fingers trembled as they brushed over the cold metal of the console. The words glared at him: “Rift breach detected—Level 5 anomaly—Sector 9 Downtown.”

A nameless weight settled in his gut, the same icy coil that wrapped tighter every time the word ‘rift’ twisted into his thoughts.

“Level 5...”

The threshold where normal hunters fled, where monsters warped from nightmare claws tore through concrete and steel alike. And now, it had spilled into the heart of the city.

Jayden forced himself upright, the creak of joints a fresh reminder he’d been crouched too long, caught between dread and decision.

The alarm blared another message: “Evacuation order: Immediate evacuation. Civilians in danger. Military response en route.”

But civilians didn’t have time. They never did.

A distant roar pushed against the cracked windows. Jayden’s breath hitched, his pulse a wild drumbeat in a throat sticky with dry panic.

He glanced at the weapon rack—his battered pulse rifle, scars etched into its body like memories he refused to forget.

He grasped it, fingers finding the familiar grip, grounding him even as the monstrous chaos unfurled outside.

---

Stepping into the fractured streets, the sour scent of ozone and scorched metal clawed at his nose. Twisted steel and shattered glass littered the pavement, reflecting the eerie blue shimmer radiating from the gaping rift yawning between two crumbling office towers.

The portal pulsated like a malignant heartbeat, veins of unstable light seeping into the cracked asphalt beneath it.

Jayden’s boots thudded hard against the rubble-strewn street. Around him, terrified citizens huddled beneath trembling streetlights, eyes wide with fear that reflected in the mirror-sheen of their tears.

A sudden, guttural scream twisted the air—a sound not quite human, but bred from it. Jayden swung his gaze toward the source.

From the rift staggered a creature—a fusion of ragged flesh and angular exoskeleton. Its limbs bent at impossible angles, long fingers scraping the air like tuning forks for terror.

Its eyes—too many to count—glowed with a poisoned amber fire.

The city’s streetlights flickered as the beast roared, a seismic vibration that rattled Jayden’s chest and sent shudders up his spine.

Around it, panic erupted into violent chaos. Cars screeched to desperate halts, horns blaring in dissonant alarm.

Jayden didn’t hesitate.

Pulse rifle raised, fingers steady despite the adrenaline crackling through his veins.

“Back!” he snarled at a staggered group frozen by shock.

The beast’s eyes rotated, locking on him with a predator’s cold, calculating hunger.

It lunged.

Time fractured as Jayden dove to the side.

Rifle barked—a staccato series of energy pulses that slammed into the monster’s limbs, sizzling steam and blackened flesh.

But the creature barely faltered.

It twisted with inhuman grace, a blur of sharpened bones and hellish intent.

Jayden’s breath slammed in his throat. Every move was a spiraling dance with death.

The rift shimmered ominously behind the beast, tendrils of crackling energy anchoring it like a spider to its web.

And then—

A pulse of memory slammed into Jayden like a fist to his chest.

The monster’s roar fractured into something hauntingly familiar.

A voice. A name.

“Lila…”

His heart tumbled. Lila—his sister. Gone. Lost to a rift breach three years ago.

Yet this thing, this snarling nightmare, bore her eyes.

Human and monstrous, split by dimensions but tethered by something darker.

Something twisted deep in the system’s code.

Jayden staggered back, disbelief anchoring heavy in his chest.

“How—?”

The beast’s body convulsed violently, limned with ghostly veins of glowing blue energy—the same signature he’d glimpsed in his system’s shadow files.

It reared, maw parting wide to reveal jagged rows of grinding bone.

“J-Jayden,” came a voice, raw and guttural, barely human.

“T-This isn’t... you.”

The creature’s eyes shrank, flickering with a faint spark of recognition.

“T-Why...” Jayden’s hand wavered on the trigger. “Why are you here?”

A shudder ran through the rift like a warning.

Behind them, sirens wailed and soldiers’ boots stomped the collapsing street.

Jayden’s instincts screamed—the breach was spreading, more monsters stirring in the fractures of reality.

But before he could react, the beast suddenly surged forward, claws raking the concrete where he’d stood moments ago, sending shards flying like hail.

With a primal roar that echoed through the night, it unleashed a pulse of raw energy—dark, twisted, and painfully familiar.

Jayden gritted his teeth as the shockwave slammed into him.

Pain blossomed down his left side, burning like molten iron.

He collapsed, chest heaving, eyes never leaving the creature now trembling at the boundary of the rift.

The monster quivered, its monstrous form flickering between terrible strength and desperate human fragility.

Then, with a sound like a breaking soul, it turned and plunged back into the gaping portal, swallowed by the rift’s gaseous maw.

The blue-lit street trembled in eerie silence.

Jayden lay on the scorched pavement, rain—or was it tears?—beginning to fall.

Behind him, the city’s distant lights flickered like fragile promise.

And somewhere deep inside, a cold, furious whisper burrowed into his thoughts.

The past wasn’t done with him yet.

The system hummed low in his veins, a returning sting of power—and a deadly question whispered on the wind:

What price would he pay to save those lost to the rifts?

The city’s ruined skyline framed his battered figure.

In the shadows beyond the breach, something watched—something waiting.

And Jayden’s path was only just beginning.
