Chapter 6

Elias Voss’s Reach

The air tasted like ash and regret. Dust hung thick inside the crumbling warehouse, drifted in lazy motes toward a chasm carved by the collapsed ceiling. Jayden crouched amid the wreckage, gut twisting with the sting of failure. Somewhere beyond the degraded walls, groans threaded the steady pulse of the rift—an unholy heartbeat marking the unraveling edge between worlds.

“Where... where did they go?” His voice scraped hoarsely against the silence.

His vision was still blurred, smeared with sweat and grime. Fingers smarted where sharp edges had bitten into flesh, a shallow cut across his forearm blossoming angry red. A cold whisper prickled along the back of his neck. He risked a glance upward through a gash in the roof.

The sky churned with sickly green and black. Rift energy hummed, tendrils of shadow wrapped like fingers around flickering street lamps outside. Something alive lurked within that eerie glow—waiting, watching. Waiting for the next moment to strike.

Jayden forced down the rising panic. Every instinct screamed to flee, but he held still. Needed to move carefully. Too many unknowns.

A metallic clatter echoed from nearby. He tensed, muscles coiling—ready to spring.

From the depths of the warehouse, a limping figure stumbled into view. A hunter decked out in scorched armor, face obscured by a cracked visor smeared with blood. The sickly green light caught the jagged badge pinned to his chest: Sector Six.

Jayden’s throat seized. Sector Six—the team that disappeared two nights ago after the rift flare in the industrial district. Officially declared MIA, unofficially whispered to be swallowed whole by the monster nests.

The hunter moved erratically, his breath ragged, body trembling like a marionette on fraying strings.

“Hey—” Jayden called, inching forward. “Are you... alive?” His voice fractured.

The hunter locked eyes through the visor, pupils dilated in primal terror.

“Don’t…” The words came out wet, raw, shattered. “Don’t make me… hurt them...”

Jayden’s breath hitched. Hurt who? The hunter’s gaze darted wildly, panic dripping from every gesture, and yet—beneath that terror—something darker writhed low and sharp. Desperation laced with something unhinged.

“Who’s coming?” Jayden demanded, voice low but urgent.

“Elias… He—he’s inside me. Controls me now.” The hunter’s hand trembled violently as it clawed at his chest plate. “Can’t stop it. They don’t listen—won’t listen…”

Elias.

Jayden’s blood iced over. The name was a ghost threading through every power struggle, every whispered conspiracy. A hunter turned mythic villain with a shadow network pulling strings worldwide. And now—this?

Suddenly, the ruined floorboard behind the hunter splintered. Heavy boots shattered debris. Another figure stepped out from the collapsing shadows—a lithe form draped in dark trench coat, face half-hidden beneath a hood. The glow from the rift gave his features a spectral chill: sharp cheekbones, eyes like cold coals set in pale skin.

Elias.

The air congealed with his presence. A low electric hum thrummed from his fingertips as he advanced. The hunter’s trembling ceased in an eerie instant; his body tensed, joints locking under invisible threads.

“Tell me again, Jayden…” Elias’s voice slithered smooth from shadows. “Do you know what I asked of Sector Six?”

Jayden swallowed hard, voice trembling through clenched teeth. “No.”

“Exactly.” Elias smiled thinly. “They were weak—puppets strangled by their own fears and loyalties. Yet the system’s true potential demands sacrifice... obedience.”

The hunter’s eyes flicked to Elias, glazed and vacant, before snapping back to Jayden with feral urgency.

“Stop him…” the hunter rasped. “He’s—”

A savage roar ripped the air before words could form. The hunter lunged forward, fingers morphing into clawed weapons slick with glistening blackness. His movements were a grotesque blur of violence. The warehouse shuddered under the impact as he tore into the walls, splintering wood and steel with inhuman strength.

Jayden barely dodged a lethal swipe that cleaved the air where he’d stood seconds ago.

“Run!” Elias’s voice commanded softly, lashing through the hunter’s mind like a cruel whip. The hunter’s expression twisted in agony and fury as he turned back toward his own teammates—shadowy figures emerging from broken doorways, their faces masked but their bodies shaking with the same unnatural infection.

Jayden’s chest slammed with horror realization: this wasn’t random madness. Elias had been breeding corruption—weaponizing hunters themselves against humanity.

“Why?” Jayden gasped. “Why do this?”

Elias paused, savoring the question like a fine wine before answering, voice low and venomous. “To remake the world in my image. Only strength—and control—can survive the coming storm.”

A distant explosion rattled the warehouse, sending shards of concrete raining down. The corrupted hunter charged into the ranks like a cyclone of death. Screams shattered the night as gunfire erupted, but it was already too late.

Jayden’s heart hammered as he pressed his back against a crumbling pillar, eyes wide with helpless rage. The scene blurred into chaos—friends turned enemies, blood staining concrete, and the rift’s sinister light framing a massacre no one could stop.

Elias stepped beside Jayden, calm and untouchable in the center of the storm.

“Your chance to rise is narrow, Jayden. The game is no longer about survival—it’s about ascendancy. Prove yourself.” His cold gaze locked on Jayden’s.

And then Elias vanished, slipping away like smoke drawn back into the abyss.

Jayden’s breath hitched. The corpse-strewn warehouse seemed to hold its breath—a grim reminder etched in crimson.

He was no longer chasing shadows.

He was staring into the abyss.

And the abyss was answering with a terrible, living fury.
