Chapter 3
The scream twisted into ragged silence like a frayed wire snapping under tension.
Jayden’s knees buckled. Hands plunged into the dirt, searching for bearings as his pulse hammered a frantic tattoo in his ears. The shadowed forest around him breathed—wet leaves rustling, brittle twigs cracking under unseen weight.
His breath came jagged, shards of cold air piercing his lungs. The system's glow pulsed faintly against his skin—a warmth curling beneath his ribs, a whisper he couldn’t ignore.
“Stay focused.” The voice wasn’t inside his mind. It wasn’t a command. It was… a presence, subtle and coaxing.
He forced himself upright, gaze darting past the jagged silhouettes of trees. No creature lurked. No eyes gleamed in the dark. Just the oppressive quiet, thick like smoke.
Then the screen emerged in front of him, fragments of pale blue digits floating in the night's void.
SYSTEM ACTIVATED
Jayden’s fingers trembled as he blinked at the data streaming in impossible clarity—his heart rate, fatigue level, a strange bar marked ‘EXP: 0/100’.
“What the hell…” He swallowed hard, mouth dry enough to catch on his tongue. “Is this… real?”
The system interface shimmered, hovering just out of reach. A prompt blinked urgently:
First Task: Assess Survival Skill — Input Required
He hesitated, stare locked on the word input. What did it want? How could he give commands to… this?
A nervous flicker ignited inside his chest. An ember of hope, tangled in dread.
A slow, ruthless whisper echoed through his mind, like steel brushing stone: Adapt or perish.
Jayden swallowed past the lump twisting his throat and spoke aloud, tone raw: “Survival skill…”
Immediately, a sequence scrolled before him. His body furnished itself with stats: Strength 2, Agility 3, Perception 4, Endurance 2.
Low numbers, pathetic by any hunter standard. But real.
Taking a shuddering breath, he reached to touch the floating text. As his fingers brushed the interface, a sudden jolt startled him—sharp as an electric sting, cold and alive.
“Whoa!”
The numbers brightened, then a bar beneath EXP blinked. Something stirred inside him, a faint surge of power vibrating like a second heartbeat.
“You can’t be serious.” His voice cracked. “There’s no way I—”
A flash of movement yanked him out of his spiraling thoughts. His head snapped toward the edge of the woods, where gasping breaths echoed.
A ragged figure collapsed into view, face bloodied, eyes rolling with desperation.
“Help…” the man gasped, voice ragged like torn paper. “Monsters… swarm the west gate…”
Jayden’s body tensed. The system blinked again, displaying a new objective:
Mission Accepted: Defend Civilians — Rewards Pending
“No turning back.” The whisper brushed across his skin like a cold breeze, feeding eagerness and fear alike.
He sprinted toward the distant shouts, muscles screaming in protest. At the edge of the city’s dead zone, the ground trembled beneath his feet—the deep growls of beasts weaving through shattered ruins.
Jayden ducked behind a cracked wall, eyes sharp as the first silhouette lunged forward—elongated limbs, jaws snapping wide, teeth glinting under the fractured moonlight.
The hunter’s instincts flared. He clenched fists, drawing energy from some newfound wellspring deeper than memory or logic.
A sharp notification blasted in his ears:
Activate Skill: Adrenaline Burst (Unlock Level 1)
“You want a show?” He grinned, breath ragged but firing on a different frequency now. “Let’s dance.”
The system crackled to life inside him—muscles surged, pain faded, time stretched thin and crisp. He launched forward, fists striking with precision born of desperation, senses slicing through night’s veil.
The monstrous figure snarled, staggering back under the unexpected assault. Two more charged, and Jayden pivoted, energy humming through every tendon.
EXP +25
A translucent bar edged upward, then blinked fiercely:
Level Up Available
His heart slammed. The system awaited his choice—skills, abilities, upgrades shimmering in the glow.
He peeled through options at dizzying speed: Strength Boost, Reflex Enhancement, Perception Heightened…
The creatures regrouped, snarling with primal hunger. Time thinned.
Jayden tapped Reflex Enhancement. The world sharped, edges crystal clear—the night spreading before him in salient danger and opportunity.
A last claw swiped; he sidestepped with uncanny grace, punching the side of the beast’s skull. It collapsed, twitching.
Another beast lunged. Adrenaline propelled him. He nailed the strike.
The growls faded, retreating into shadows.
Mission Complete
The system sang sweet victory:
EXP +80
LEVEL UP ACHIEVED
A new menu blossomed, cascading choice and power—one whispered loudly beneath the triumph:
Unlock New Ability: Resonance Strike
Jayden paused, feeling a surge of potential he’d never imagined.
He selected, and a warmth radiated from his core, spreading outward like wildfire engulfing dry timber. His fist thrummed with energy raw and alive.
Then, as the creatures vanished, a sudden chilling notification blinked on his HUD in jagged crimson letters:
WARNING
The system’s true purpose is hidden and dangerous.
Jayden’s breath hitched like a snare snapping tight.
The night had shifted. The hunt had only just begun.
He stared into the black, the message burning in his vision, and somewhere deep in the distance—an impossible sound: a low, mechanical hum threading beneath the wind.
