Chapter 2
Jayden’s lungs burned with each ragged gasp, the collapse’s dust clawing at his throat, seeping into his burning eyes. The ground beneath him trembled with muffled groans, a slow, cruel rumble that crawled beneath the skin like a living thing. His fingers scraped the cracked earth, clutching at the jagged remains where the fissure had torn apart reality itself.
Colors—liquid, unnatural—swirled in the air above the breach, vibrant violet and sickly green hues bleeding into each other, twisting like a waking nightmare. The abyss hummed, a deep, vibrating pulse that filled Jayden’s ears and chilled his bones.
He was breathless. Broken. But still alive.
A searing ache shot through his left side where a shard—rock or something else—had gashed him open. Blood slicked his palm, warm and sticky, a cruel tether to his failing body. Somewhere deep in his gut, a low drumbeat throbbed: his heart, fighting to hold him in the living world.
And then—the system stirred.
A sharp, electric sting bit into his consciousness, licking along his spine like a serpent untangling. His vision blurred, the edges fraying between pain and something else, something colder, sharper. The abyss’s chorus paused, replaced by a sudden silence so thick Jayden could taste it.
“User detected,” a voice whispered in the hollow chamber of his mind. No mouth moved, no source visible—just the voice, smooth as glass, shaped by purpose.
Jayden’s breath hitched, fingers clutching at the dirt beneath him. “What... what do you want?”
An unreadable glow flickered beneath his eyelids. A translucent window blinked into existence above his shaking hand, hovering like a hologram carved from starlight:
SYSTEM INITIATED LEVEL: UNKNOWN STATS: ——— OPTIONS: [ACCEPT POWER] [SURRENDER COMPLETELY]
His heart slammed against his ribs like a prisoner desperate to break free.
“Accept power... Surrender completely,” he mouthed, disbelief cracking his voice. “What does that even mean? I don’t understand.”
The abyss’s ominous hum crept back, a reminder that time was leaking away like sand through desperate fingers.
Jayden’s gaze darted upward—shadows flickered around the periphery, the fissure’s jagged edges casting warped silhouettes. He felt eyes watching, waiting. The weight of their judgment pressed down like thunder overhead.
“I’m... not ready,” he breathed. But the system’s pulse bloomed in his veins like wildfire, relentless and unforgiving.
His fingers trembled, reaching hesitantly toward the holographic choice.
“Protect those that you failed,” the voice inside whispered, barely audible yet ferocious. “Uncover the truth. This power is your only key.”
The shards of fallen rock groaned underfoot as a guttural sound erupted—a low, beastly growl from the shadowed tree line not far off.
Jayden jerked his head toward the noise.
Two yellow, luminescent orbs blinked in the dark.
The hunt was far from over.
He had to decide.
Accept power. Or surrender.
His breath hitched, eyes locked on the glowing prompt that pulsed like a heartbeat in the void of his vision.
The system waited.
The night waited.
And the lost system hungered—for what had yet to come.
A hand tightened around his shoulder, not gentle but unyielding.
“Jayden.”
The voice was sharp, familiar—cut through the chaos like a blade.
He spun, muscles coiling, ready for threat or salvation.
But the figure emerging from the shadows did neither.
Instead, she smiled—a cold, unreadable curve of lips.
“Choose wisely.”
The holographic interface hovered between them, shimmering and alive.
Time fractured.
And Jayden’s fate was suspended on a fragile blade-edge—teetering between damnation and rebirth.
He reached out again. Fingertips trembling—his choice searing through the storm of his soul—
Before he could press—
A sudden crack shattered the silence. From the shadows, a distorted scream raveled the night.
The figure's eyes flashed—not human.
The system's glow surged.
And Jayden’s world slipped into a chasm deeper than the fissure’s maw.
