Chapter 16

The Rising Darkness

Jayden’s lungs burned as he crashed through a narrow alley, the jagged echoes of Elias’s voice still clawing at his skull. “Time to choose your path.” The words felt like cold fingers slipping under his skin, twisting tight around his ribs. His heart hammered with a primal urgency—not just to survive, but to understand. To fight.

He stumbled to the edge where the alley spilled into a broken street, gasping, chest heaving like a storm. Neon signs flickered overhead, sputtering in the restless rain, casting twisted shadows over shattered glass and steaming manholes.

A thorny silence pressed down, save for a low, clicking growl—a sound too deliberate to be a stray animal.

Jayden’s gaze snapped upward.

A cluster of shapes shifted just beyond the puddle-dappled curb, winding together like living shadows. Shapes no longer random or mindless. The monsters. They moved with unsettling precision. A dark tactician’s dance.

Eyes glinting, teeth sharp as razors.

They had changed.

The beasts weren’t the feral scavengers from before, stumbling into chaos like wild animals starved of intellect. No. Something had shifted in their patterns, their cadence. Each step was measured, synchronized—a murderous choreography.

Jayden crouched, barely breathing. Fingers brushing over the familiar pull of the system’s interface at his wrist. The once quiet mechanic now thrummed with restless energy, pulses of information bleeding through cracks in his awareness.

“Evolution… adaptive intelligence,” it whispered, shards of code flickering into view.

Confusion spat fiery webs across his mind, tangled with a deeper dread.

Elias’s influence.

The man was seeding the abyss—corrupting the monsters, molding their twisted instincts into tools of war. Not just rampaging beasts anymore, but strategic hunters primed for the kill.

Jayden’s fists clenched as the creatures began their slow creep toward the street center like a dark tide.

A guttural command hummed in the air, something ancient and chilling.

Suddenly, the ground trembled. Asphalt cracked, vein-like fissures spiderwebbing crazily beneath his boots.

From the fractures rose a massive figure—a towering colossus draped in ragged, molten armor, eyes glowing with a sentient flame.

Jayden froze.

This was no ordinary monster. Its presence felt centuries old, layered with a knowledge lapsing across eons.

The creature’s voice radiated, not with shrill animal growls but a deep, resonant timbre that vibrated in the marrow of his bones.

“Jayden Reeve.”

The name scraped through the rain like a blade.

His breath stalled. Every instinct screamed to run—

But something steadied him.

“Who are you?” Jayden’s voice cracked, weapons instinctively raised but trembling under the weight of a nameless reckoning.

The beast stepped forward, the air pulsing with ancient power.

“I am Duraloth, Keeper of the Lost Code. I have watched your ascent, shadowed your failures and your fire.”

Jayden’s heart galloped—words like “Lost Code” cut deeper than any blade. His system—the one pulsing in his blood—was no accident. There was history buried beneath the scars.

Duraloth’s eyes narrowed, flames flickering into a coil of intent.

“You grasp at fragments of the system’s truth, yet blind to the cost of its awakening. Elias seeks to twist the system’s core—turn creation into annihilation.”

Jayden swallowed, the familiar hum of his system rising into a roaring storm inside him.

“Why show yourself?” he demanded, voice sharper now, wild with battle-born certainty. “What’s your stake in this war of shadows and monsters?”

A low growl rolled over the streets as other creatures halted—a stifling silence broke the rain.

Duraloth bent forward, the earth groaning beneath him.

“The rising darkness is not merely Elias’s doing. It is the residue of an ancient war—the war that shattered dimensions and lost histories. Your system, Jayden, is the catalyst. But it can be the salvation—or the curse.”

Jayden’s fingers unconsciously traced the scar on his wrist where the system first awakened. A hum of warnings laced with cryptic promises.

Flames flickered in the monster’s eyes.

“Beware the harmony of power and purpose. Choose wisely. For if you fall, the rifts will gorge deeper, swallowing all that remains of this broken world.”

Jayden’s breath caught, mind racing—

The street vibrated anew, shadows converging, monsters gathering like silence before the storm.

Then—suddenly silent—the closest beast snapped, teeth bare, eyes burning with something more than instinct.

Duraloth raised a taloned hand, the monstrous horde halting as if pulled by an unseen tether.

“You have one choice left. Heed or defy.”

Jayden stepped back, breath ragged, system’s pulse skyrocketing, heart teetering on the brink of revelation and ruin.

From the stillness, a new presence surged—one neither human nor beast.

And then—

A voice colder than night whispered next to his ear.

“The truth you seek is buried where the last rift opened. Are you ready, Jayden?”

Jayden whipped around—

But the street was empty.

The rain pounded harder, thunder rolling like the drumbeat of an oncoming war.

His eyes locked on Duraloth, the ancient guardian who had just declared a new order in his fractured world.

And then—

The ground beneath them ruptured violently—

Darkness exploded upward—a portal shimmering with violent energy, swallowing the street whole.

Jayden stared, breath caught—

As something slithered from the abyss, a monstrous silhouette crowned with eyes like burning coal—

Waiting, watching—

And it spoke.

“Welcome back, Hunter.”

The night shuddered.
