Chapter 15
The echo of Elias’s voice didn’t fade. It lingered like a poison, seeping into Jayden’s bones. His heart seized in a strangled rhythm, muscles tightening as the heavy knock hit again, sharper, deliberate.
No pause. No mercy.
Jayden’s fingertips brushed the cold steel crate beside him, seeking the last shards of composure buried beneath exhaustion. The system’s dormant hum whispered in his mind—a pulse, a beckoning. He swallowed hard, lungs scraping dry air.
Choice, the system whispered. Ascend.
He slid backward, shadows swallowing his outline as the warehouse door groaned on heavy hinges. Through cracked glass panes, streetlamps spilled weak halos, the world outside a fractured mirror of normalcy. Yet tonight held more menace than any rift or monster’s growl.
“Jayden Reeve.” Elias’s voice sliced through the night. “Your path ends here.”
The raw challenge sparked embers in Jayden’s jaw. The loss from before—the shattered hope of family, the stolen peace—glared back from memory’s dark corridor.
His voice, rough and low, slipped into the void. “You don’t know what I’ve become.”
Behind him, the system’s screen flared suddenly—the sharp grid overlay shimmering, fluid light pulsing to a new rhythm. Jayden’s eyes narrowed.
Unlocking Ascendancy Tier: Phase One.
The words burned across his vision. A surge like molten steel filled his veins, muscles twitching involuntarily. His senses scrambled, sharper—each sound a thread, each shadow a potential threat.
But before he could extend or define this newfound power—movement.
Thin, deliberate footsteps, like a predator’s taunt, echoed from the warehouse’s far end. Jayden’s breath caught.
Not just Elias.
Others.
The air thickened—the scent of ozone and burnt iron tangling with the musk of old wood and rust.
Two figures broke into the half-light, faces obscured beneath hoods, their posture sleek and lethal. Hunters.
Deadly. Precise.
Jayden’s gaze flickered, pulse exploding.
“Looks like you brought a welcome party,” he muttered, voice a razor’s edge.
The taller hunter smiled, lips thin and calculating. “Elias sends his regards. The system’s fire will burn you out.”
Without hesitation, Jayden launched forward, the air rippling as his hands ignited with bluish flames—an echo of his new tier. Floors cracked beneath the blast.
The shorter hunter weaved, blades shimmering in darkness, slicing through the sparks like a specter hunting ghosts. Jayden pivoted, narrowly dodging a slash that bit into the concrete behind him.
The warehouse became a foul symphony: the clash of steel, the hiss of flames, the muted thud of heavy boots.
Jayden’s mind raced, the system overlay charting trajectories and weaknesses. A flick, a surge—his strength doubled, muscles coiled, senses razor-sharp.
Yet their coordination… uncanny.
“They’ve trained for this,” Jayden growled, sweat prickling at his temples.
A sudden rush—a blade slashed toward his side, burning cold against skin. He winced, shifting weight just in time, grabbing a rusted pipe, swinging it like a whip toward the taller hunter’s head.
But the hunter twisted away gracefully, eyes flashing with icy contempt.
“You think this power saves you?” the taller hunter hissed.
“Power only protects those ready to wield it.”
Jayden’s breath caught, a primal scream caught in his throat as the second hunter vanished into shadows. Seconds stretched, then shattered.
A sharp tug at his belt—a flash of movement—and the system’s core crystal, glowing faintly, ripped free in a cold, grating yank.
Jayden’s gaze snapped sideways, horror flaring.
The shorter hunter held it, smirking. “This is the prize tonight.”
Jayden lunged, but the warehouse windows shattered with heavy gunfire. Bullets chipped into crates, sparks raining over his skin.
The taller hunter’s voice cut through the chaos: “Run, Jayden, or die with your shadows.”
No time to think. Jayden spun, heart pounding wild, limbs screaming revolt, and tore toward the nearest exit.
The cold night air struck his face, night’s chill a cruel slap after the furnace inside him.
Behind him, the hunters’ footsteps erupted into a hunting chorus.
Jayden’s chest heaved.
System core—gone.
The chain around his neck felt impossibly empty, a burning void gnawing at his skin.
Ahead, alleys twisted and vanished. His breath fled in ragged spurts. The city blurred—lights, sirens, the scent of damp concrete and distant rain.
His mind screamed—
No.
Not like this.
But the chase thundered.
And somewhere distant, Elias’s voice echoed again—
“Time to choose your path.”
