Chapter 12
Jayden’s lungs convulsed, each ragged breath tearing at his chest like shards of razorglass. The night’s sudden silence pressed down, thick and suffocating—broken only by the distant, guttural groans emanating from the rift’s gaping maw. Shadows clawed at his vision, twisting like dark fingers reaching from the underworld itself.
His heart hammered a frantic tattoo, the icy voice still echoing in his bones: “You don’t get to decide the fate of the system anymore.”
Why did that sound so final? So cold—like the last shackle snapping tight?
He swallowed hard, fingers trembling as he wiped the damp sweat from his brow. The rain had faded to a mist, droplets clinging to his skin, heavy with the scent of ozone and decay. Every instinct screamed to run, but his feet rooted deep in the cracked asphalt, fractured beneath the weight of a world unraveling. The stranger was gone—vanished into the black beyond like a nightmare dissolving at dawn.
But the threat lingered.
Jayden forced himself forward, the rift’s pulsating edges alive with an unseen hunger. Beneath his boots, concrete gave way to jagged earth, spitting loose debris that crunched underfoot. The air thickened, a metallic tang rising with every step—like the aftermath of blood spilled into dry soil.
Ahead loomed the cavernous entrance, framed by twisted shards of reality. Blue-tinged light flickered erratically, casting fractured shadows that danced like demons awaiting sacrifice. He slipped through the threshold, the world behind collapsing into a faint memory, swallowed by the hungry void.
Inside, silence warped into a dense pressure. The grip of the rift clawed at his chest, a cold presence whispering secrets meant to be forgotten. Jagged stone walls dripped with phosphorescent ichor, each droplet hissing faintly as it hit the ground—a symphony of poison.
Jayden’s senses sharpened, every nerve alight. The system’s interface flickered in his mind—a ghostly overlay pulsing in response to the rift’s malevolence. Unknown origin… unstable… energy signature rising.
The underworld wasn’t just a void—it was a crucible. And he was its reluctant sacrifice.
“Focus,” he muttered, voice dry as dust. His hands flexed around the hilt of his knife, the metal cold but reassuring.
A distant rumble throbbed through the cavern, vibrations dancing along the walls like a warning heartbeat.
He moved deeper.
Cracks in the structure glowed faintly, revealing glimpses of twisted roots snaking from the abyss. They wriggled unsettlingly, alive with monstrous intent. Jayden skirted between them, breath shallow, senses taut.
Suddenly, a low growl shattered the silence—a beast massive and feral, slinking through the shadows, its eyes twin coals burning with hunger.
Jayden’s pulse surged. Reflex overrode fear. He crouched, drawing his knife in a fluid motion, the blade whispering promise in his palm.
The creature lunged—a blur of sinew and teeth.
Metal met flesh with a sickening snap. Pain flared along his forearm as Jayden twisted free, slicing deep into the beast’s flank.
It roared—a sound that seemed to tear through dimensions—before retreating into the darkness.
Jayden’s breath came in heaving bursts, the metallic taste of blood filling his mouth. His arm throbbed beneath torn fabric, but adrenaline drowned the ache.
No time to bleed.
Pressing onward, the passage narrowed, walls closing in with suffocating intent. The air grew colder, a biting frost creeping through his clothes, gnawing at flesh.
Then, an unearthly glow bathed the chamber ahead—a shimmering veil of energy, translucent and pulsating like a heartbeat locked in time.
Jayden approached slowly.
His breath caught.
Before him stood a massive door—ancient and sealed with intricate sigils that pulsed with the same ethereal light. The air around it thrummed with raw power, a hum vibrating through bone and soul.
This was no mere barrier.
The system's interface flickered again, words forming clearly: Origin Core Sealed.
His fingers involuntarily traced the edges of the door, cold as death but alive with energy.
A sudden crack echoed from behind—the underworld shifting, collapsing, or worse.
Jayden spun around.
Shadows writhed, coalescing into a figure—familiar, impossible.
Elias Voss stepped from the darkness, eyes gleaming like shards of obsidian.
“Did you really think you could outrun destiny, Jayden?” His voice was silk wrapped in steel.
“We both want the same thing,” Elias said, a twisted smile carving across his face. “But only one of us will control the system’s true power. And this door…” He gestured to the seal, “...leads to the beginning—and the end.”
Jayden’s mind raced.
The final barrier. The origin of what he had only just begun to understand. The key to everything.
Heartbeat pounding, rain still whispering on the surface world, two fates entwined in the cavern’s icy breath.
And beyond the door, the secret waited—silent, deadly, alive.
For a long moment, time froze.
And then Elias reached out a hand, fingers gracing the seal’s intricate patterns.
Jayden’s knife trembled in his grip.
The seal pulsed—once.
Twice.
A shattering crack split the silence as the door began to yield.
The underworld whispered a warning, but no one was listening.
Because the real descent had just begun.
