An Unlikely Ally

The chamber’s silence pressed against Kael’s skin like cold wet cloth. His chest heaved on ragged breaths, each inhalation tasting stale—like dust stirred from ancient tombs, choking the remnants of hope that clung stubbornly to him.

That whisper outside—the veil cracking—still pinged painfully against his nerves, an invisible blade slicing doubt wider open.

He curled his fingers into fists, nails biting into palms roughened from years of exile, years of fading into nothing.

Then, footsteps. Soft, deliberately paced.

Kael’s eyes shot to the shadowed archway. A figure stepped into the flickering torchlight, the air around her humming with taut energy.

A rogue mage. The scent of burnt sage and something sharper—metal and secrets—laced the stale chamber air.

“You don’t hide very well,” she said, voice low, sardonic, threading a cold smile at the edges.

Kael’s jaw clenched. “Name yourself.”

She tilted her head, eyes flashing emerald fire under a tangled tangle of raven-black hair. “Lira. And I know about the Order.”

That single name cracked the fissures in Kael’s resolve. The Order—the shadow hovering over every shattered village, every stolen hope whispered in the wind. A name soaked in blood and silence.

He didn’t trust her. Not even a fraction.

But her presence here meant two things: she knew the forbidden veils, and she was dangerous.

“Why come to me?” Kael demanded, voice raw, uneven.

Lira shrugged, one crooked smile teasing defiance. “Because we’re both running from the same ghosts. And secrets like mine…” She paused, eyes narrowing. “They don’t stay buried.”

Kael’s heart hammered a wary rhythm. He wanted to tear her from the shadows, demand every thread she had about the Forsaken System.

But instead, he just nodded. The collapse of trust came slower than he expected—but it came.

“Talk,” he said.

Lira stepped closer, the torchlight dancing in her eyes like twin flames licking at dry twigs.

“The Forsaken System,” she began, voice dropping to a harsh whisper, “isn’t just a leveling tool. It drains more than your soul’s power.”

Kael’s breath snagged like a net caught on jagged glass. The pit of his stomach twisted.

“Then what?” he urged, voice tight.

She leaned in, every nerve screaming caution as her words sliced through the silence.

“There’s something deeper—darker—lurking beneath that soul drain. Something that’s been covered up for centuries. And if it wakes...” She let the threat hang, sharp and unsaid.

Outside, the veil shuddered again.

Kael’s mind caught fire.

The shadows didn’t just watch anymore.

They were ready to move.

And so was he.
