Shifting Boundaries

The letter slipped from Kael’s fingers, fluttering to the floor like a dying moth. The faint scrape against the cracked stone echoed louder in his chest than anywhere else.

His breaths came ragged—each inhale scraping dry through a throat squeezed tight with raw, painful clarity. Around him, the chamber groaned, the air thickening, as if the very walls registered the storm rolling loose inside him.

Kael’s gaze darted upward. The dim glow of phosphorescent moss clung stubbornly to the shadows, but something deeper was stirring beneath the surface. A subtle hum, a warping of the familiar geometry.

A pulse, uneven and barely perceptible—like reality itself was breathing, shuddering on the edge of fracture.

He blinked, blinking again, as the edges of the room blurred. The stone pillars warped, bending as though the entire ruin began to flex and breathe with him.

Kael forced himself to steady his shaking hands, every nerve screaming in the silent surge.

You’re not losing it. This power—it's not just awakening. It’s reshaping the world around you.

Images crashed behind his eyelids: raw memories unraveling like snake coils, freezing and blazing at once. The sniffle of a child in the dark, a mother’s scream swallowed by stone, a sword exchanging forgotten names with flesh—it all collided.

A low rumble vibrated beneath the floor, jagged and sudden.

Kael’s fingers tightened into fists, nails biting into his palms, grounding himself.

Then, Seraphine’s words echoed again inside his skull—the venom beneath civility, the cold calculus of extinguishing Forsaken like him.

No.

That name, Forsaken, felt heavier now. Almost like a brand burned into his skin deeper than shame or exile.

The shifting air flickered once more, and Kael’s eyes caught a glimpse: a distortion—a ripple in the corner of the room—not solid, but monstrous.

Four towering shapes, hulking forms dripping with darkness, glided flawlessly through the warped light, claws scraping against stone. Faces jagged and obscenely twisted like nightmares sculpted from nothing but rage.

Their presence sucked the warmth from the air. It left behind the scent of rot and a silent scream clawing at Kael’s spine.

The thing is, no one else was looking.

The rift between here and somewhere else breathed open—fleeting, trembling, and raw.

The beasts slipped past him like ghosts, gone before his thoughts could caged-clap into a warning.

Kael’s heart thundered, and for a moment, the bitter cold of isolation squeezed him as fiercely as any blade.

He staggered back, eyes still scanning the empty space where the horrors had just vanished.

His voice came out rough, a harsh rasp in the silence.

“Did—did you see that?”

Lena, standing across the room with eyes wide, shook her head softly.

“No. I didn’t.”

Kael swallowed, feeling the knot twist tighter.

“I’m not sure it was... real,” he admitted, though his voice betrayed him.

“Or maybe,” Lena murmured, stepping closer, eyes narrowing—“maybe it’s exactly real.”

The air felt heavier, loaded with something ancient and incomprehensible.

Kael’s gaze returned to the spot where the creatures had briefly stirred the shadows, now empty but forever marked in the marrow of his bones.

He could almost hear the distant crash of those monstrous limbs disappearing back into the veil between worlds.

“This isn’t just about power anymore,” he said grimly. “It’s tearing at the seams of everything we know.”

A distant howl broke the night beyond the decrepit walls, a sharp reminder of hunts yet to come.

Kael hadn’t just crossed a threshold—he’d shattered it.

And now, the game wasn’t just changing.

It was breaking.

The shadows around them thickened, the distortion crawling closer like a living thing desperate to consume.

He felt the pull—a lullaby of destruction humming beneath his skin.

The boundaries were shifting.

And on the other side, something was waiting.

Something hungry.

Something unseen.

Kael’s hand clenched tighter on the letter’s crumpled edge, knuckles white.

His eyes scanned the darkness as a cold certainty settled in—

This was only the beginning.

A monstrous breath brushed the air, cold and lethal.

Then—silent as a fading nightmare—the beasts vanished.

But for Kael, their presence lingered.

Like a countdown unwound in his blood.

His mind screamed them back: Not yet. Not to me.

The chamber fell into a suffocating quiet.

But outside, the veil cracked with a whisper.

And from that fragile breach, the unseen watched.
