Chapter 3
Kael collapsed onto the cold, cracked earth, the nascent dawn brushing his sweat-soaked face with a chill that bit through his cracked skin. His breath came in ragged rasping bursts, each inhale tasting of iron and dust. The weight of the night’s revelations pressed against his skull like a vise tightening with each heartbeat.
The Forsaken System had stirred—a beast clawing its way from the depths of oblivion. And with it, the nightmare beneath it had woken, whispering venomous riddles into his shattered mind.
His fingers trembled as he reached toward the cracked amulet dangling from his neck—the one that had sparked the surge of memories the moment it kissed his skin. The runes etched into its worn surface pulsed faintly, thrumming in rhythm with his ragged heartbeat. A magnet pulling fragmented echoes from the shadowed corners of his past.
Eyes fluttering shut, Kael let himself sink into the haze, coaxing the swirling mist to unveil what lurked beneath the ruins of his memory.
The world around him dissolved—disintegrating into shards of light and shadow. He stood alone within a spectral void, colors stretched thin like smoke, the air thick with the scent of burning cedar and cold iron. His own breath echoed in his ears, fragile and uncertain.
Then, pieces began to emerge—disjointed and flickering like a sputtering flame caught in a cruel wind.
A child’s laughter, brittle and skewed.
A rush of icy rain on skin bruised by unseen blows.
Echoes of a name—whispered, seared into his mind like a branding iron.
"Kael..."
The voice was distant, layered beneath the creeping haze, as if it was carried across a decade of silence.
He reached—fingers grasping blindly at the shifting memories—but they slipped like smoke, writhing and twisting beyond his hold.
Shards of faces flashed before him: fleeting glimpses of bright eyes, smiles twisted in pain, and shadows tangled with regret. They collided—fracturing and reforming as though the shattered mirror of his mind refused a whole truth.
Images unraveled into nightmares: a blistering blaze engulfing a chamber bathed in crimson light, screams tearing through a cold stone fortress, and—most haunting—a pair of hands, scarred and trembling, letting go.
His chest tightened, lungs aching as a phantom weight pressed down, dragging him deeper into the abyss of forgotten sins.
“Why... can’t I remember?” His voice broke, raw and ragged in the void.
The answer was a void itself—silent and suffocating.
A flicker of light to his right drew his focus—a silhouette etched in silver-blue, barely more than a shadow wreathed in mist.
Memory snapped.
A face.
Familiar.
Too familiar.
Her eyes were a storm—steel and fire tangled beneath lashes dark as midnight. A faint scar traced the curve of her jaw, a whisper of pain or betrayal Kael could not yet place. Her lips curved into a smile—cold, laced with something that tasted like regret and secrets better left buried.
"No..." he whispered, heart hammering against ribs like a caged beast desperate for escape.
But as he reached out toward her, the world shattered.
Glass splintered, crashing shards of fractured memory raining down. The void collapsed into darkness as a silent scream clawed its way up his throat, strangling hope beneath waves of despair.
Then, only silence.
Kael awoke with a strangled gasp, the shards of fractured memories still pricking at his mind like ice-cold needles. His chest heaved with the ragged rhythm of breath, eyes darting madly through the dim confines of the cave where he’d dragged himself to rest.
The dawn outside had bled crimson, casting long, ominous shadows across the jagged rock walls—shadows that seemed to pulse with a life of their own.
His hand clenched the amulet, its muted glow now a solemn heartbeat against his palm. The face—her face—etched itself deep beneath his skin, burning with a nameless ache.
Questions twisted through him, cruel and relentless: Who was she? Why did her image haunt the corners of his mind, just out of reach? And what horrors had driven his memories to fracture like shattered glass?
A sudden rustle from the cavern’s entrance snapped Kael’s senses taut. His hand strayed instinctively to the dagger at his belt, the cold steel a reassuring weight.
A figure stepped inside—a slender silhouette framed against the dim light, eyes unreadable in the gloom.
“Kael,” came the voice, low and steady, edged with a dark certainty that sent a shiver skating down his spine.
“Time’s running out,” the stranger said. “They know you’ve awakened. And they’re coming—for everything you lost.”
Kael’s gaze fixed on the stranger, heart pounding not just from fear, but the undeniable pull of fate tightening its noose.
He swallowed hard, voice barely more than a grunt. “Then... I have no choice.”
The amulet pulsed faintly beneath his fingers—a slow, rhythmic throb promising power and peril in equal measure.
As footsteps echoed behind the stranger, the ghost of a memory flickered again—her steel gaze piercing through the fog of his mind.
His breath caught.
And the world shattered once more.
