Chapter 2

First Level's Price

The light didn’t fade.

It burned behind Kael’s closed lids, an inferno clawing at every nerve ending. His body sagged against the cracked stone wall—cooled sweat slicked his skin, icy yet clammy under the rough fabric of his torn shirt.

A silence thick as grave soil filled the narrow alley where he crouched. But inside him, a storm raged—wild, raw, impossible to stem. His breath rattled: short, uneven gasps that tore across his ribs.

Then, it hit.

A slash of pain—deep and sharp, as if something inside him was tearing away from flesh and bone. Not his muscles or tendon, but something buried deeper, something whispered, something alive.

The words from the void whispered back.

Level One: Unlocked

A tremor ran through his veins, slow then rising to a frenzy. Images—fractured memories—bled into his vision: the hollow eyes of the soldiers who had turned on him, the blaze that swallowed their ranks, the cold slap of betrayal that left him exiled.

His hands clenched, nails gouging the stone beneath them. The Forsaken System coursed through his soul, like frost burning skin from the inside.

A voice echoed—distant but razor sharp—breaking the fragile stillness.

“Kael Arden.”

He snapped his head up, pupils flaring as shadows twisted around the alley’s cracked edges. But no one emerged. Only the night, thick and watchful.

A low hum vibrated somewhere deep within his chest. The Forsaken System’s cruel reminder: every gain exacts a price.

His fingers itched, tingling with an unnatural glow beneath the skin. The air around him pulsed with a portent—a promise and a threat.

A faint chime rang inside his mind, sharper than a knife’s edge.

Experience Points Acquired: 1

The number, though small, burned cold.

Kael forced himself upright, senses sharpening like a blade drawn from darkness. The city beyond the alley breathed in slow, ragged gusts: distant cries, the static buzz of magic splintering in the air, the low drip of something unseen leaking into the night.

He staggered forward, the weight of newfound strength pressing on him like a shackle.

Every step was a battle.

His skin prickled as if tiny needles danced beneath it. The pain hadn’t relented. If anything, it grew fiercer—twisting between agony and something darker, a shadow curling inside his chest.

“What are you?” he croaked, fury lacing his voice.

No answer came, only the whispers of ruined streets and shattered oaths.

Kael’s jaw clenched. The Forsaken System had awakened, sure—but it was no gift. It was a wound festering beneath flesh, a voice promising power while feeding on his soul’s marrow.

His thoughts spiraled—questions clawing at the edges of his sanity. How much of himself was truly left? How many fragments had been sold to this darkness?

A scuff behind him made him whirl.

A figure cloaked in threadbare shadows stood hulking at the alley’s mouth—eyes glowing faint, eerie.

“Don’t trust the price they whisper in your blood, Leveler,” the stranger murmured, voice rough like gravel grinding underfoot.

Kael’s heart jerked. He should flee, but his legs felt anchored in place. A toxic curiosity pinned him.

“Who are you?”

The shadowy figure stepped forward, hunching like a wolf about to pounce.

“A warning.”

The figure’s lips barely moved, yet the words lanced through the night air.

“Your first level will bleed you dry… but the true cost lies buried in the echoes of your past.”

Kael’s fists burned tighter, the Forsaken System pulsing like a dark hymn chanting through his veins.

“Leave me.” His voice was barely more than a rasp, but the edge held steel.

The figure hesitated—then slipped back into the night like smoke pulled away by a cold wind.

Only the echo of that low whisper remained, curling around Kael like a poison-laced veil.

His pulse thundered; the pain flared once more, deeper, sharper—etched beneath his skin, binding him to a destiny he didn’t want but couldn’t escape.

The city’s distant chaos hummed louder. Somewhere beyond the veil of night, monstrous growls rippled beneath the earth, dungeons waiting to swallow the living, secrets waiting to drown the lost.

Kael staggered toward the faint glow of dawn breaking the horizon.

One thing was certain.

The Forsaken System had awoken.

And so had the nightmare beneath it.
