Chapter 17

The Protégé Emerges

Kael’s chest tightened with every slow, deliberate step that reverberated through the cavern’s hollow bones. The shadows shifted, coiling like living things, swallowing the faintest glow of his fading resolve. His fingers twitched, itching to draw the knife he no longer trusted against an enemy who wore no obvious face.

Then she stepped forward.

Seraphine Draxil.

The flicker of torchlight caught her eyes—razor sharp, impossibly cold—cutting through the dark with merciless precision. Behind her, a group gathered: nobles, generals, and whispered murmurs carried on the stiff, cold air.

Kael’s heart thudded against his ribs, a frantic drum in the silence between them. This was no casual meeting. No mere showdown in the shadows.

“This kingdom,” Seraphine’s voice flew out, low and commanding, wrapping around every ear like iron threads, “has been shackled by weakness for too long. The Forsaken System threatens to unravel all we’ve built. But today, hope is reborn.”

She raised a hand, palm up, like the goddess of reckoning herself summoning a miracle.

From behind her stepped a figure so still, so singularly poised, that even the murmurs stilled.

A young woman.

Her cloak was deeper than night, swallowing her slender frame. Her hair fell in a curtain of midnight silk, lips as unreadable as the stars above, eyes gleaming with a fierce, almost predatory light.

“Meet my protégé,” Seraphine proclaimed, voice ringing hard as a war bell’s toll. “Elysia Virelle—the future of this kingdom.”

Kael’s jaw snapped shut, muscles coiling. He’d heard whispers—rumors—of a new force rising under Seraphine’s tutelage, someone to wield power that rivaled the Forsaken. But standing there, watching her move with the fluid grace of a hunter who knew every breath was a battle, something inside him convulsed.

Elysia’s gaze met his then, a spark igniting beneath lids heavy with calm menace.

There was something frighteningly familiar in the way she held herself—like a storm restrained by will alone.

“Power,” Seraphine continued, eyes alight with cruel pride, “that will cleanse this land of the Forsaken’s poison.”

Kael’s breath hitched, a sudden torrent of memories cascading like dagger strikes: the sickening pulse of the Forbidden Veil, the cold hunger of his own shattered leveling system, and the raw, savage energy lurking beneath—something primal, corrosive.

Elysia’s fingers curled tight around a pendant hanging from her neck, the faintest whisper of that same corrupt glow shimmering beneath the metal. The room seemed to hold its breath.

Kael’s chest pressed inward, the weight of recognition hitting like a blow.

That power—

It was his.

Or a dark reflection of it.

The crowd faltered, exchanging uncertain glances as a ripple of unease flickered through the ranks.

But Seraphine’s smile didn’t waver. Her voice sharpened.

“Do you see now what stands before you? The Forsaken System’s days are numbered. With Elysia, we will rise above.”

A silence fell—heavy, suffocating, then ruptured by the faintest sound of Kael’s steadying inhale.

He took a step forward, shadows bleeding from his fingertips, an ancient fury stoked anew.

The game had changed.

And the protégé’s emergence was only the beginning.
