Chapter 14
The darkness didn’t just swallow the room—it devoured it like a ravenous beast. The fading pulse of the sigil’s glow sputtered and died, leaving Kael shrouded in a stifling black that pressed against his skin, seeped into his bones.
He couldn’t breathe. His lungs clenched tight, the air thick and close, as if the night itself was a living thing, waiting.
Movement flickered at the edge of his vision—a ripple. Something not quite natural, like heat waves rising off a sun-baked stone, except this made no sense in the cold silence.
“Who’s there?” His voice was a harsh rasp that cracked and caught.
No answer. Just the creak of old wood settling, the slow drip of water somewhere distant, and beneath it all, an unsteady, sinister whisper—cut loose from place and time.
A blade gleamed in the dark, catching the faintest trace of the sigil’s glow. It hung suspended, like a specter’s promise.
Kael’s hand went up, fingers curling tight around the hilt of his own sword. His heart hammered in a desperate rhythm, a drumbeat against the encroaching void.
Footsteps. Soft, deliberate, yet somehow uneven—as if the earth itself warped under each tread.
“Show yourself!” His demand fractured the silence, shards of desperation sharp enough to cut.
The air thickened—warped—ripples ran through shadows, deep shadows, blacker than anything natural. The room’s corners seemed to pulse, breathing, shifting as boundary lines between here and somewhere else blurred.
Kael’s breath hitched. Memories stabbed sharp—ghostly faces twisted in anguish, voices fraying at the edges of recollection. The dark thickened, coalescing into something monstrous, something… familiar.
A low growl—half in his mind, half out—guttural and gutted by pain.
From the blackened folds of the room, it emerged.
Motion slow, deliberate, dripping with nightmare. A form built from broken shadows and aching regrets.
Kael stared, heart in his throat, as the creature stepped forward, its edges crackling and pulsing like corrupted embers.
Eyes—dank voids lined with bloodshot veins—locked on him.
Tormented echoes slithered inside the beast’s maw—faint whispers intertwined with Kael’s own memories: failures, screams, and an unhealed wound that festered deep inside.
The creature’s grotesque silhouette trembled on limbs that seemed both flesh and nightmare.
“Kael Arden.” The voice rumbled low, almost mournful—a twisted echo of his own.
“You can’t outrun what you’re made of.”
Cold fire flashed down Kael’s spine. This was no ordinary breach.
This was the Veil Rift calling out, exploiting the tear between worlds to drag him into a nightmare born of his own shattered soul.
His grip tightened, knuckles white as his sword met the floor with a muted thud. The air snapped electric, the room folding around him like a dying star collapsing inward.
Beside him, the dagger’s last gleam winked out.
Time slowed. The monstrous Rift—an abomination of shadow and memory—reared for an attack.
Kael’s next breath caught, suspended on the edge of a razor-sharp moment.
And then—
A pulse. A shudder.
The monstrous form lunged forward.
And everything plunged into darkness.
