Chapter 12

The Ritual Revealed

The locket clattered to the stone floor, its cold clang echoing through the cramped chamber. Kael’s breath hitched, ragged and shallow, the air feeling suddenly too thick—as if the room itself were closing in on him. His fingers trembled, tingling with a phantom heat that crawled under his skin, sinking deep along his veins.

Outside the cracked window, the last dying light of dusk bled red into the shattered cityscape, casting jagged shadows that flickered like dying embers. The scent of damp earth and burnt ash lingered, settling into the back of his throat, choking.

Kael’s heartbeat hammered a brutal rhythm against his ribs, pounding louder than the heavy silence settling between thoughts he didn’t want to face. What exactly had he done that night? The question wasn’t just a whisper; it settled on his tongue, sour and metallic.

He forced his eyes open, dragging his gaze away from the locket’s fractured glass face. The image inside—a faded photograph of a woman’s smile—blurred in the gathering darkness. A memory lurked behind it, sharp, vicious: flickering candles, chanting voices, a circle etched in blood.

He stumbled backward, shoulders scraping against the cold stone wall, as if pressing his back against solid rock could hold the swirling doubts at bay. But the knot tightening in his gut refused to loosen; his past clawed up from the depths, relentless and raw.

A soft noise—a scraping, scratching sound—rippled from the opposite corner, raw and unnatural in the silence. Kael spotted it just in time: a thin, curling wisp of smoke rising from a cluster of ancient parchments sprawled across the floor. The edges blackened, consuming some forgotten text.

“No…” His voice snapped, brittle and hollow. The ritual texts. The forbidden knowledge he thought had been buried forever.

His eyes scanned the pages, symbols bleeding into each other like living vines—arcane script twisting, reshaping with each frantic blink. Among the writhing runes, one emblem burned into sight: a jagged sigil, half flame, half thorn, its center a blackened eye.

An icy shiver ripped along Kael’s spine, the hair on his arms standing on end. He knew that symbol.

It was the mark of the Forsaken Rite.

The Forsaken Rite: whispered in shadows, spoken only by those steeped in fear and reverence. The curse that had shattered lives, twisted souls, and—most brutally—exiled him.

His pulse skyrocketed, fists curling tight. This was no coincidence. The ritual wasn’t some distant nightmare; it was stitched into the fabric of his exile, pulsing alive beneath all the lies, pain, and forsaken hopes.

Kael’s vision blurred, sweat pooling at the base of his neck as the room seemed to tilt. In that instant, his locket—forgotten on the floor—flared with an unforgiving cold. Glittering frost-shot tendrils slithered upward, wrapping around his wrist like spectral serpents.

Before he could react, a scorching brand seared through his left forearm. Pain exploded—sharp, white-hot and cruel. His muscles spasmed, breath hitching with ragged gasps as the world constricted.

He tore his sleeve back, expecting to find flame or festering wound. Instead, a searing wound baked itself into his skin—a fiery sigil, glowing with cruel luminance. The jagged eye, stitched from thorn and flame, branded onto his flesh like a ruthless curse.

Kael’s fingers trembled as he traced the freshly burned symbol. It pulsed beneath his skin, alive with unspoken power. Panic bubbled up like poison, cold and suffocating.

“Why...?” His voice cracked against the silence.

The room grew colder. Shadows lengthened, creeping closer like predators eager to taste his fear. Somewhere deep in the locket’s frost-bitten core, an echo whispered—a voice, broken and distant—but unmistakably his.

You cannot run.

Kael’s eyes snapped upward.

From the edge of the chamber, where darkness pooled thick as spilled ink, a pale glow glimmered. It wasn’t a person—no, it twisted and writhed like molten silver energy, coalescing into an intangible shape. The vision wavered but drew closer.

He backed away, heart thundering against his ribs like a war drum, breath coming in sharp bursts.

The symbol burned hotter, its glow a furious heartbeat against his skin.

“Show yourself!” Kael barked, voice raw as he steadied his trembling hands.

The shimmer hesitated, then transformed—fragile and faint, a woman’s silhouette flickering with the same cold radiance as the icy locket.

Her eyes—deep wells of mourning and fury—stared straight through him.

“Kael...” The voice wasn’t a voice but a memory, a ghost wrapped in regrets. “You carry the Forsaken Rite’s blood. Its chain will never break.”

Before he could respond, the sigil flared violently—burning through flesh, through bone, through the fragile veil of his resolve. The symbol seeped ink-black veins, winding upward toward his elbow.

Pain and revelation crashed down together—a tidal wave of lost truths and shattered bonds.

The light faded, and silence reclaimed the chamber. Kael’s breath shuddered, chest rising and falling in ragged waves, fingers stained dark with the symbol’s silent, scorching promise.

He staggered to his feet, the weight of the past crushing anew.

Outside, the city moaned beneath the dying sky, but inside, Kael Arden was no longer just a forsaken outcast.

He was marked.

And the ritual had only just begun.

The door at the chamber’s mouth slammed shut with a thunderous bang.

Someone—or something—was coming.

Kael’s eyes locked on the burning symbol, its cold fire screaming through his veins.

With every pulse, every searing itch—one truth burned clear:

The Forsaken Rite had found him.

And it meant to claim him.

A slow, deliberate knock echoed from beyond the heavy door.

Kael’s breath caught.

The world held its breath with him.

Who stands there?

The sigil burned brighter still.
