The Desperate Proposal

Emma’s breath hitched as the heavy mahogany door swung shut behind her with a final, echoing thud that swallowed the tiny space she occupied. The vast penthouse pent-up with sterile wealth breathed around her—cold marble, leather, glass walls rising like silent sentinels to the stars beyond.

She forced a swallow past the scratchy lump in her throat, biting the inside of her cheek to stay grounded.

Alexander Dorian sat like a dark god carved from shadows at the head of the obsidian conference table. His sharp jaw was clenched, white knuckles gripping the armrest, eyes flicking over her with a predator’s calculation. The only sound was the ticking of the minimalist clock on the far wall, as if it too weighed the gravity of this moment.

“This is the offer,” Alexander said, voice low and smooth, threading silk and steel. “A contract marriage. One year. No strings. No questions. Purely business.”

Emma’s stomach twisted, ice spreading its fingers through her veins. Marriage—a word twisted and weaponized here—like a noose disguised in velvet.

“You want me to marry you?” The trembling was harder to hide than her resolve.

He leaned in, the scent of his cologne sharp and intoxicating—cedarwood and something darker she couldn’t name.

“Yes. You sign this, and the Carrington name stays intact. Your family’s debts vanish overnight. The company survives.”

She met his gaze, searching for any crack, a hint of mercy. But his eyes were blade-sharp, implacable.

“I’m not a bargaining chip,” she hissed, clutching the edge of the table, her nails grazing the glassy surface.

“Neither of us are free,” Alexander said quietly. “Not if this empire falls. We need each other. And the clock’s ticking.”

A soft buzz from her phone pierced the tension. She glanced down, a message from the accountant—final warnings about foreclosure.

The weight on her chest tightened like tightening wires. All roads end here.

Her eyes darted back to the contract, the heavy paper gleaming coldly under the chandelier light. Terms detailed the conditions, benefits, a fortune balancing precariously on one signature.

And then, beneath the tiny print—almost invisible in the low lighting—a clause etched in cryptic legalese: a veiled lock on her freedom that Alexander didn’t mention.

Her fingers trembled as she lifted the pen, heart hammering, breath ragged.

“Sign it,” Alexander said, voice riddled with menace and something unreadable beneath.

Emma’s hand hovered, her eyes glancing once more over the fine print, but the knot in her stomach screamed to stop.

Swallowing the bitter pill, she dipped the pen and signed. The ink bled black across her destiny.

The room seemed to exhale, shadow pooling deeper beneath the glinting city lights.

Her fate was sealed. For now.
