A Desperate Proposal

The knock came sharp and relentless—three rapid pounds that echoed against the peeling drywall of her cramped apartment. Lila Hart’s fingers trembled as she held the small, weathered canvas between her palms. Outside, the city’s neon heartbeat throbbed faintly through cracked windows, spilling pinks and blues onto cracked tiles littered with dried paint blobs and discarded sketchpads.

“Open the door, Lila. You owe two months’ rent,” a gruff voice growled from the other side. The landlord’s breath hung thick with cigarettes and authority.

Her throat tightened, a dry scrape biting into every word she swallowed. She edged back, cradling the canvas like it might shatter into a million pieces if she let go. Outside, the footsteps dragged away down the hallway, but the threat lingered—like winter’s chill seeping through a cracked windowpane.

The eviction notice plastered to the door fluttered like a mocking specter: Deadline: Today. Midnight.

Lila’s eyes darted around the tiny room, landing on her meager belongings—a suitcase bursting at the seams, half-empty paint tubes, and her old leather jacket draped over a broken chair. This was no longer the sanctuary she’d dreamed of. It was a gilded cage unraveling thread by thread.

Her phone vibrated sharply, jolting her heartbeat into a frantic rhythm. A new message: “Meeting at CrossCorp Tower. One hour. Come alone.”

Damian Cross.

The name alone twisted something cold and dangerous in her chest. The man was a myth in the city’s ruthless skyline—a billionaire whose empire was built on whispered deals and iron-fisted control. Nobody crossed him without consequences.

Her breath caught. Why now? Why her?

She slid the canvas onto the scratched tabletop, smoothing the creases with care. Its image—a haunting portrayal of two fractured figures, arms reaching but never touching—felt like a mirror to her own fractured existence.

The elevator’s hum echoed through the building’s bones as she stepped inside CrossCorp Tower. The lobby was a cathedral of glass and steel; cold light poured down, reflecting off polished surfaces. Lila’s worn boots clicked nervously against the marble.

A receptionist gave her a curt nod, then gestured toward a sleek elevator ignoring the usual throng of suited executives. The ride upwards was silent, save for the soft whirr and the steady beat of her anxious pulse.

A man awaited her when the doors slid open: Damian Cross himself. His sharp suit tailored impeccably, eyes as dark and unreadable as a storm’s gathering. He moved with predatory grace, each step deliberate.

“Lila Hart,” he said, voice low and unyielding. “You’re in a difficult position.”

She swallowed, sweat prickling at her temples. “I’m not interested in your pity.”

His lips curved into a faint, unsettling smile. “Neither am I. That’s why I’m offering a solution.”

He produced a leather-bound folder, sliding it across the glass table like an offering—and a trap.

“You don’t owe me your freedom,” he said, eyes piercing. “But a contract marriage? One year. Legally bound. Protect your name, your future, and for me, a damn good reason to keep certain threats at bay.”

Lila’s fingers hovered over the folder, her mind a tempest of fury and fear.

“No games,” he continued. “Midnight is your deadline. Decide before the city turns.”

Her pulse thundered. The room seemed to tighten around her.

The promise of escape. The weight of chains disguised in golden ink.

She looked up—his expression unreadable, but that chill in his gaze promised one thing: this was not an offer made lightly.

The clock’s hands edged closer.

Her decision—or her downfall—loomed just beyond the stroke of twelve.
