The Lowest Hunter

Jayden Reeve’s fingers ached in the chill, knuckles scraped raw from yesterday’s scuffle. The damp alleyway reeked of burnt rubber and stale sweat, sharp against the sour stench rising from the cracked storm drain nearby. Neon signs flickered overhead, drowning the street in toxic green light, slicing the night like broken glass.

“Next time, watch your back, rookie.” Benny's gravelly voice carried from under the rusted fire escape, warped by exhaustion and bruised pride.

Jayden didn’t reply. He just wiped the grime and blood from his lip with a trembling sleeve. His heart thudded—a hollow drum inside a ribcage too brittle from hunger and too tight with frustration. Being the city’s lowest-ranked hunter wasn’t just a title; it was a sentence. Every day a survival scramble, every job a gamble where odds stacked mercilessly against him.

He forced his legs forward, dragging his boots through scattered garbage and broken glass. The restless hum of distant sirens mixed with the low growls echoing from the rift zones—a constant threat looming just outside human territory.

Jayden paused, pressing his back against the graffiti-covered brick. Beyond the cracked windows of decaying tenements, the city thrummed with indifferent life. But here, in the shadows, hunters like him skated on the edge of oblivion.

He clenched his jaw. Last week’s failed contract still burned in his memory—the sweet kid from Lowbridge Grazed Street, dead because Jayden was too slow.

“Not again,” he whispered.

A harsh chime from his makeshift comm system sliced the night air. The cracked screen blinked insistently: Alert: Rift detected. New portal—coordinates incoming.

Jayden swallowed past the lump rising in his throat. The moment he dreaded and craved arrived with brutal irony. The rift scanners were a hunter’s lifeline and curse. Every signal promised salvage, but risk edged close like a blade.

“Come on, Jay…” His voice cracked.

His worn jacket caught the damp breeze, tethering him to cold reality. The coordinates blinked in, mapping to the city’s outer limits. The system interface—hidden deep, dormant beneath layers of code in his neural implant—churned quietly. Most hunters never believed the rumors about systems. Power-ups. Secret leveling. Legends whispered and denied. But Jayden had glimpsed a flicker one desperate night, a ghost of something beyond the grinding struggle.

He owed it to the fallen to find more.

Jayden sprinted, each step a desperate claim against collapse.

Across crumbling rooftops, beneath half-collapsed walkways, the city stretched like a dying beast: torn by the monster-infested zones spawning from dimensional tears. Hundred-foot spikes of blackened rock erupted into the sky, shimmering veins pulsing with alien energy. Hunters and government drones patrolled the thin boundaries where humanity’s hold wobbled.

Jayden reached the marked block—a long-abandoned industrial park shrouded in shadows and whispered rumors.

The air quivered, charged with static. He crouched behind a rusted shipping container, eyes darting across the shattered landscape.

Then he saw it.

The rift pulsed—not the usual churning vortex, but a jagged fissure, kinking and coiling like a living wound in the fabric of reality.

It throbbed with cold indigo light that seemed to suck heat from the air. Tendrils of smoky black gas spilled out, curling into the dark in serpentine dances.

Jayden’s breath snagged in his throat.

This wasn’t just another portal. The system’s scanner stitched warning symbols in his vision, but none matched this anomaly. The air hummed with weird energy—something alive, hungry, waiting.

Suddenly, the ground beneath a nearby pile of rubble shuddered. The shadows seemed to stretch and pulse—unnatural movement breaking the silence. Jayden’s hand moved to his hunting blade, fingers trembling.

“I’m not ready for this,” he muttered, voice barely audible.

But before he could retreat, a whisper like ice scraped the back of his mind. The system—awakening.

“Level up available.”

His heart slammed against his ribs, a pulse of raw adrenaline.

The rift’s tendrils shifted, reaching outward.

Jayden blinked hard, torn between fleeing and stepping closer.

Something primal stirred. Something dangerous.

And the lowest hunter might just be the world’s only hope.

A crackle of energy surged through the air.

Then—

A sudden, chilling roar erupted from the rift itself, tearing the night apart.

Jayden’s eyes widened as the fissure twitched violently, exposing a swirling abyss pulsating with impossible colors.

He was trapped between collapse and awakening, caught on the knife’s edge of destiny.

And the lost system hadn’t finished with him yet.
