Capítulo 1
The rain fell in jagged shards, slicing through the midnight haze like shattered glass. Maya Sinclair crouched beneath the skeletal remains of a rusted fire escape, the cold metal biting into her palms through the thin fabric of her gloves. Around her, the city roared—neon signs flickering in fractured tongues, the distant screams of sirens wailing a broken lullaby, the wet concrete shimmering with spilled blood and forgotten dreams.
A shadow shifted past the fractured glass of the second-floor window above, a silhouette etched sharp against splintered light.
She swallowed hard. Her breath came in shallow hisses, vanishing in the chill.
Memories clawed at her—sharp and jagged as the shards beneath her.
The night she swore the vow.
Three years ago, the alleys of this same district had cradled a secret buried beneath smog and desperation. That night, a bullet had punched through the still air, aimed straight for a trembling figure sprawled on cracked pavement: her brother Ethan.
Maya’s hands had closed around an ancient ring, cold as death, nestled in her palm like a living thing. The words she’d whispered then were a trap, a promise stitched with blood:
“For his life, I bind my soul.”
Her lips pressed flat. That vow saved Ethan, tethered him to breath. But it had also bound her—tighter than any chain.
Her fingers traced the faint tattoo curling along her wrist now—an unyielding reminder written in ink and fate.
The fire escape groaned under shifting weight.
Maya’s eyes snapped upward.
A man stepped into the dim halo of a flickering streetlamp. Tall, impeccably dressed, his dark eyes sliced through the rain and shadow alike. Adrian Voss.
“Still clinging to the past, I see,” he said, voice smooth as lacquered steel.
Maya’s jaw clenched. “What do you want, Adrian?”
He smiled, but it didn’t reach those cold eyes. “To remind you, dear Maya, of the price you agreed to pay. Vows like yours… they come with consequences.”
She swallowed, the knot in her stomach tightening. “I’ve kept my side.”
“And I am bound to see yours enforced.”
Lightning cracked overhead, illuminating the jagged smile twitching at the corner of his mouth.
Maya’s breath stalled. A shiver ran down her spine—not from cold, but from the growing certainty that breaking her vow wouldn’t just shatter her world. It would unleash a reckoning neither of them could outrun.
Adrian’s voice softened. “Break the vow… and you break us both.”
The rain tapered into silence.
A deafening whisper hung in the air: choice was a luxury Maya no longer possessed.
Behind her, the city pulsed—alive, watching, waiting.
And somewhere deep inside, a desperate flicker of rebellion stirred.
One question burned brighter than any neon glow.
Was freedom worth the cost of blood?
She stepped from the shadows, eyes blazing.
“Then I’ll die trying.”
Adrian’s smile sharpened, almost approving.
Because the vow wasn’t just a promise.
It was the beginning of a war.
