Capítulo 1

The Deal of Desperation

The click of the door echoed sharp against the marble walls as Lila Morgan stepped into the penthouse suite. Outside, the city lights blinked like distant stars; inside, the air was thick with expensive silence. A crystal decanter caught the glow from a single chandelier, scattering fractured rainbows across the room.

Across the vast space, Adrian Crane waited. His presence was a blade calmly sheathed but gleaming beneath tailored charcoal. The way he leaned against the edge of his polished desk, fingers steepled, spoke of effortless command—and unyielding control.

Lila swallowed the knot tightening deep in her throat. The sharp scent of leather and cedar mingled with something colder—like a promise buried, waiting.

“I didn’t expect you to show,” Adrian’s voice was smooth, but the undertone sliced through the cool air. “You’re usually more cautious.”

She forced a tight smile, folding her hands in front of her like a shield. “Desperation tends to make people less cautious.”

His gaze drifted to the papers laid out before him, crisp and white against the dark wood. “Then let’s not waste time.”

The weight of her mounting debts began to throb like a dark drumbeat inside her ribs. The gallery was on the brink—without funds, her family’s legacy would crumble. Tonight was a gamble that could either save everything or bury her.

Adrian pushed the contract forward. “This is the agreement.”

Her eyes flicked to the fine print, scanning with practiced diligence, heart jackhammering against her ribs. A marriage contract. One year. No children. No claims on his assets. The terms were mercilessly clear.

“Married to a billionaire,” she whispered, voice thick with irony. “Sounds like the plot of a bad romance novel.”

He cracked a wry smile. “Reality is often stranger—and less forgiving—than fiction.”

She bit back the rising tide of panic. “Why me? Why offer this to a woman with nothing to give but a name?”

“Because you’re not nothing.” His gaze locked on hers, sharp as a blade. “You’re potential. And I have a motive that runs deeper than this city’s skyline.”

The words teased the edges of a secret, but the shadows in his eyes refused to give more.

Lila exhaled slowly, the gravity of the choice folding over her like silk—and steel. The deal would buy her time, a fragile shield against the crushing tide. But at what cost?

Her fingers trembled as she reached for the pen, steel settling into determination. She could drown in pride or survive on this lifeline. The price was high but uncertain.

Just as the tip of the pen kissed the page, Adrian’s voice dropped to a near whisper.

“One last thing.”

He slid the contract closer, revealing a small, almost hidden clause—inked in fine script that caught the light with cruel precision.

Lila’s breath hitched. The words carved themselves into her skin hotter than flame.

“If the terms are broken, certain... personal details become public.”

The room seemed to tilt, shadows flickering like threats along the walls.

She stared—heart plunging into ice. Adrian Crane’s secrets weren’t just business. They were the locks on a cage she was about to step inside.

The pen trembled between her fingers.

Something had just become much more dangerous than a contract.

And she had already said yes.
